The 98th Academy Awards are finally here, and many of the major categories are seemingly still up for grabs after a long and unpredictable awards season.
Ryan Coogler’s vampire drama “Sinners” enters the night with a record-breaking 16 nominations, the most of any film in Oscars history. It will face tough competition from fellow Warner Bros. release “One Battle After Another,” Paul Thomas Anderson’s dark political thriller which earned 13 nods. The two films have racked up wins throughout the precursors from this year’s awards season, and they’re up against “Frankenstein,” “Bugonia,” “Hamnet,” “Marty Supreme,” “Sentimental Value,” “Train Dreams,” “F1” and “The Secret Agent” for best picture.
“Sinners” has gained momentum after winning the top prize at this month’s SAG’s Actor Awards, which also featured Michael B. Jordan winning for lead actor over frontrunner Timothee Chalamet for the ping-pong drama “Marty Supreme.” It’ll be a tight race between the two actors, plus Leonardo DiCaprio (“One Battle After Another”), Ethan Hawke (“Blue Moon”) and Wagner Moura (“The Secret Agent”).
In lead actress, “Hamnet” star Jessie Buckley has led for most of awards season, and she’s up against Emma Stone (“Bugonia”), Kate Hudson (“Song Sung Blue”), Rose Byrne (“If I Had Legs I’d Kick You”) and Renate Reinsve (“Sentimental Value”).
In the supporting actor category, it’s between Benicio Del Toro (“One Battle After Another”), Jacob Elordi (“Frankenstein”), Delroy Lindo (“Sinners”), Sean Penn (“One Battle After Another) and Stellan Skarsgård (“Sentimental Value”). Supporting actress is another close race between Elle Fanning (“Sentimental Value”) Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas (“Sentimental Value”), Amy Madigan (“Weapons”), Wunmi Mosaku (“Sinners”) and Teyana Taylor (“One Battle After Another”).
This year also introduces a new category that recognizes casting directors; the first-ever nominees are Nina Gold (“Hamnet”), Jennifer Venditti (“Marty Supreme”), Cassandra Kulukundis (“One Battle After Another”), Francine Maisler (“Sinners”) and Gabriel Domingues (“The Secret Agent”).
Conan O’Brien hosts the ceremony for the second year in a row. See the winners below as they’re announced.
