Weekly active users of Codex and ChatGPT Work among EU small and medium businesses grew to 8.1 times their May level by October 5, OpenAI said in a report published Wednesday.
The company reported growth in every EU member state. Its analysis defines small and medium businesses as those with 200 or fewer associated users, so the finding reflects activity in OpenAI’s sample rather than all European businesses.
Codex and ChatGPT Work now generate more than half of output tokens in the report’s EU ChatGPT Enterprise sample. The share varies widely by country, from 22% in Slovenia to 85% in Lithuania, OpenAI said.
The report also compared companies’ usage intensity, defining frontier firms as the top 10% by output tokens per active user. That comparison included ChatGPT Enterprise and Business accounts.
In September, EU frontier firms generated more than four times as many output tokens per active user as typical EU firms. Frontier firms outside the EU generated more than twice the output per active user of EU frontier firms, according to OpenAI.
EU-based companies represented 10% of frontier firms globally in the sample. OpenAI argued that wider access, worker skills and deeper use could help close the gap in adoption intensity.
