OpenAI hires SpaceX’s Graham Seamans to lead cybersecurity sales

OpenAI has hired Graham Seamans away from SpaceX to run sales for its cybersecurity business, according to Bloomberg.

Seamans comes from the SpaceX-linked xAI, where he led sales operations. He joined xAI in August 2025 and was central to pitching the Grok chatbot to enterprise customers, with Wall Street firms a particular focus. The hire was reported on October 16, 2026.

A familiar pattern in the sales org

Seamans is not a lone defector. He marks OpenAI’s third significant sales hire from SpaceX-linked companies in roughly a month.

Brian McCarthy came over in September 2026. Ismail Elmas followed in early October. Seamans now completes the trio.

The new role puts Seamans in charge of selling OpenAI’s cybersecurity offerings. Security is a notoriously hard sell. Buyers are cautious, procurement cycles are long, and nobody wants to be the executive who approved the tool that caused the breach.

The resume behind the hire

Before his stint at xAI, Seamans spent approximately eight years at MongoDB, the database company. His titles there included Regional Vice President in the US and Area Vice President for Northern Europe.

He stayed at MongoDB until July 2025, then moved to xAI the following month.

His time at xAI added a different layer. Pitching Grok to Wall Street meant competing for enterprise budgets directly against OpenAI’s own products. OpenAI is now hiring someone who knows exactly how its rivals frame the pitch against it.

Rajic’s revenue playbook

The hiring spree traces back to Dali Rajic, OpenAI’s Chief Revenue Officer. Rajic himself joined the company in August 2026.

Under his leadership, OpenAI is putting a heavier emphasis on enterprise sales growth. The company is also exploring new revenue streams, including possible advertising.

Talent keeps moving around the Musk ecosystem

The departures come against a busy backdrop for SpaceX. The company completed its acquisition of AI coding startup Cursor for $60 billion on August 14, 2026.

Movement between Musk’s ventures and OpenAI carries its own subtext. Musk co-founded OpenAI before becoming one of its most vocal critics, and xAI positions Grok as a direct competitor to ChatGPT.

What this means

The more telling signal is the overall shape of the hiring. Pulling three senior sales executives from SpaceX-linked companies within about a month suggests OpenAI is assembling its enterprise sales organization quickly and deliberately.

Advertising remains an exploratory idea, not a finished product. Enterprise contracts, by contrast, are being actively pursued through senior hires like this one.

The things to watch are straightforward. First, whether OpenAI continues drawing executives from the SpaceX ecosystem, or whether this trio represents the end of the current wave. Second, whether the cybersecurity business produces concrete customer wins under Seamans. Third, how Rajic’s broader revenue push, including the advertising question, shapes the company’s commercial story ahead of any listing.
