OpenAI just poached one of SpaceX’s senior commercial leaders to run its global sales operation. Brian McCarthy has been named Vice President of Worldwide Sales at OpenAI, tasked with expanding the company’s corporate customer base and driving international growth. It’s a big swing for a company currently valued at roughly $852 billion and actively preparing for a public listing that could push it past the $1 trillion mark.
A new sales regime takes shape
McCarthy’s hiring is the first major leadership move by Dali Rajic, OpenAI’s recently installed Chief Revenue Officer. Rajic joined from cybersecurity firm Wiz in mid-August, stepping into the role vacated by Denise Dresser, who departed after just eight months.
The enterprise bet
The timing of this hire maps directly onto OpenAI’s stated ambition to derive half its revenue from enterprise customers by the end of 2026. That’s a massive shift for a company that became a household name through ChatGPT, a consumer product.
OpenAI now counts more than 2 million business customers, a figure that has doubled year-over-year. But raw customer count and meaningful enterprise revenue are two very different things. Converting mid-market companies using API credits into Fortune 500 organizations signing seven-figure annual contracts requires a fundamentally different sales infrastructure.
IPO positioning
OpenAI filed confidentially for an IPO earlier in 2026, targeting a valuation that would exceed $1 trillion. At its current $852 billion private valuation, the company is already one of the most valuable private entities in history.
The broader context here is OpenAI’s ongoing structural transformation. The company has been transitioning from its original nonprofit structure to a capped for-profit entity, with the eventual goal of becoming a public-benefit corporation.
