OpenAI expands GPT Live voice mode to support file attachments and projects

OpenAI’s GPT-Live, the new default voice model family for ChatGPT, launched on July 8, 2026, and brings file attachments, project integration, memory, and search into what used to be a fairly isolated corner of the product.

The practical shift is meaningful: you can now hold a conversation with ChatGPT and hand it a document at the same time, without switching to text mode to do it.

What GPT-Live actually is

GPT-Live is a new family of full-duplex voice models, meaning the system can listen and speak simultaneously rather than taking turns. The flagship model is GPT-Live-1, with a lighter version called GPT-Live-1 mini available to free-tier users.

GPT-Live can delegate heavier cognitive tasks to more powerful models, including GPT-5.5, while keeping the voice layer responsive.

Paid subscribers get GPT-Live-1 with the full feature set. Free users access GPT-Live-1 mini, which carries the same conversational architecture but with reduced capability headroom.

File attachments and project integration

The most operationally significant addition is file attachment support during live voice sessions. Users can attach files directly in the middle of a voice conversation and have ChatGPT work with that content in real time.

Alongside files, GPT-Live now supports image processing, memory features, and web search during voice sessions.

GPT-Live now hooks into ChatGPT’s Projects feature, which lets users maintain persistent context across sessions, including files, preferences, and custom instructions. That integration spans Work, Codex, and desktop environments.

There is a caveat worth flagging: the ChatGPT Library, which stores documents separately from Projects, currently does not support direct file search or addition during a voice session.

The evolution from Advanced Voice Mode

GPT-Live is best understood as an incremental maturation of what OpenAI previously called Advanced Voice Mode, rather than a clean-break reinvention. Advanced Voice Mode introduced more natural prosody and emotional range to ChatGPT’s speech but still relied on a turn-based system. What GPT-Live adds on top is structural: connecting voice to the rest of the product ecosystem, including search, memory, file uploads, and Projects integration.
