Hulu's uproarious murder mystery comedy series Only Murders in the Building returned for its fourth season in 2024, and season 5 is on the way. Led by the incomparable trio of Selena Gomez, Martin Short, and Steve Martin, Only Murders in the Building follows an unlikely group of friends as they investigate homicides that take place in their swanky New York City apartment building. The driving force behind the story is the gang's successful podcast, and the irreverent series cleverly pokes fun at the modern true crime obsession while also highlighting humorous generational clashes.

Season 4 takes the series to all new heights as Mabel (Gomez), Oliver (Short), and Charles (Martin) head to Los Angeles to oversee the production of a film based on their podcasting experiences. Meanwhile, the murder of Charles' long-time stunt double, Sazz (Jane Lynch), gives the podcasters a new case to become obsessed with. With a decision that seemed like a no-brainer, it only took a few weeks for Hulu to renew Only Murders in the Building for its fifth season.

The First Guest Star Joins Season 5

it seems as if the series is setting up for a Raymond Chandler-esque approach to the next installment.

Though the finale of season 4 was cathartic and exciting, it also revealed the first guest star for Only Murders in the Building season 5. The same day that season 4, episode 10, "My Best Friend's Wedding" aired, it was confirmed that surprise guest star Tea Leoni would return in season 5 to reprise her role as Sofia Caccimelio. Leoni's Caccimelio attempts to enlist Charles and Mabel to help locate her missing husband, Nicky "The Neck" Caccimelio, and she insists that his disappearance has everything to do with the Arconia.

Spilling even more interesting tidbits about the upcoming fifth season, showrunner John Hoffman explains how Leoni's character was teased in episode 9, and how she represents a world "we haven’t talked about too much yet in New York." This presumably means organized crime, and it seems as if the series is setting up for a Raymond Chandler-esque approach to the next installment.

Read Hoffman's full comments here:

I think she's the great tease at the end of the finale and a little bit of an intriguing bump forward. She's an extension of the little news report in Episode 9 that Mabel makes note of at the hospital. [Sofia] is the wife of the Dry Cleaning King of Brooklyn, and maybe a couple of dry cleaning outlets in Manhattan, as well, we may come to know.

But beyond that, it’s a world opened up potentially that we haven’t talked about too much yet in New York, so she holds a lot of intrigue.

Hulu wasted no time when renewing their hit comedy series for another season, and Only Murders in the Building season 5 was confirmed only two episodes in to season 4. This continues a trend of early renewals for the irreverent murder mystery, and suggests that the show is nowhere near it's tipping point. Though nothing has been confirmed yet, Only Murders season 5's quick pick-up hints at more seasons in the future as well.

Only Murders in the Building season 4 premiered on August 27, 2024.

Only Murders In The Building Season 5 Cast

Expect Mabel, Oliver, & Charles To Return

Despite a few jarring twists throughout season 4, the core cast of Only Murders in the Building will stay intact for season 5. Anchoring the show for all four seasons has been the unlikely trio of Millennial artist Mabel (Selena Gomez), high-maintenance theater director Oliver (Martin Short), and droll former TV star Charles (Steve Martin). Without any of the main three, Only Murders in the Building wouldn't quite sing like it does at full strength.

While the revolving cast of supporting characters tends to change from season to season, a few consistent guests have popped up again and again. Meryl Streep could return as Oliver's new wife, Loretta, as could the cat-loving fellow Arconia resident, Howard (played by Michael Cyril Creighton). Da'Vine Joy Randolph's grumpy Detective Donna Williams likely won't be too far away from the investigation, and she's been a constant force since season 1, as has Jackie Hoffman as the ornery neighbor, Uma.

Madam Secretary star Tea Leoni made a surprise appearance in the season 4 finale as Sofia Caccimelio, and it has since been confirmed that she'll return as the wife of missing dry cleaner king, Nicky "The Neck" Caccimelio. This new storyline opens the door for a wealth of new guest stars, but no one outside of Leoni has been revealed yet.

However, the arrival of Tea Leoni's Sofia Caccimelio threatened to interrupt their reflective period, and she attempted to enlist them in locating her missing husband, the dry cleaning king, Nicky "The Neck" Caccimelio.

Though they're initially reticent to accept the case, Sofia insists that her husband's disappearance ties back to the Arconia, pretty much ensuring they'll get involved eventually.
