One Tree Hill’s Bethany Joy Lenz Breaks Silence on Hilarie Burton Feud Rumors
The stars of One Tree Hill don’t need to go looking ‘round rooms wondering what they gotta do to sum up their bond.
“I’m so in love with our little family,” Hilarie Burton said on a 2020 episode of Chicks in the Office. “We have squabbles likes families do. They’re few and far between. But I’d take a bullet for those kids. I love them.”
And part of where their relationship is going is knowing where it’s coming from.
“Our friendship has taken on so many different incarnations,” Bethany Joy Lenz added in a 2021 People interview with Burton and Sophia Bush. “There were times when we loved each other, there’ve been times when we’ve really not liked each other, there have been times when we’ve just ignored each other. It’s gone through all the ebbs and flows for various reasons—from just being young and dumb to people intentionally inserting themselves into our relationships and trying to separate us, to life—just travel and you can’t keep up with everybody all the time.”
Lenz described some of the challenges their friendship faced in her new book Dinner For Vampires, in which she writes about her “life on a cult TV show while also in an actual cult.”

Looking back at her early days on One Tree Hill, the actress recalled how she “wasn’t equipped to get too close to Sophia,” whom she described as both “bubbly and compassionate” as well as “even more intelligent”—noting “her mind could’ve been put to good use by NASA.”
“Frequently favored and constantly underestimated in life because of her beauty, Sophia worked obsessively at proving her value—a character trait that made her perfect to play Brooke Davis but clashed with my own insecurities and militant beliefs about how one should go about proving their value,” Lenz wrote. “I missed the irony that I was doing exactly the same thing, only I was using religion as my benchmark. My budding friendship with sweet Sophia became a casualty of this and instead of sitting shiva for my ego, I really f--king wish I could turn back time, walk into her trailer, and give her a long, hard hug.”
And while fans don’t want the costars to be anything other than close, lately they’ve been wondering if Lenz and Burton have been feuding. Still, the Haley James Scott alum tried to offer followers peace of mind.
“I love Hilarie, I have always and will always,” Lenz said on an October 2024 episode of Call Her Daddy, “and I don’t have any problem with her. There have been some bizarre misunderstanding that I really hope we can figure out one day. But I love that girl.”
As fans wait for that day to come—and if they’ll finally get a One Tree Hill revival—keep reading to learn more about the behind-the-scenes dynamics.
