The first season of Netflix's live-action One Piece highlighted plenty of awe-inspiring attacks and techniques. Monkey D. Luffy has his arsenal of Gum-Gum powers, of course, while Buggy's Chop-Chop Cannon looked brilliantly ridiculous in season 1. Zoro actor Mackenyu impressed with his character's three-sword style, and Luffy's final axe kick to take down Arlong packed the level of destruction demanded by such a pivotal moment.
But those moves are nothing compared to what's coming in One Piece season 2. A barrage of new Devil Fruit users from Baroque Works, combined with characters like Chopper and Smoker finally appearing, promise an array of hard-hitting techniques that dazzle you before they slam you to the ground.
Curiously, Netflix's official One Piece season 2 trailer gives viewers a sneak peek at what is by far the most powerful move in the live-action series so far.
The Giants' Hakoku Sovereignty Is More Powerful Than Anything In Live-Action One Piece So Far
A standout moment in the One Piece season 2 trailer sees giants Dorry and Brogy slashing their swords in tandem, sending a massive ripple across the ocean toward a monstrous fish. In Eiichiro Oda's One Piece, this attack is known as Hakoku Sovereignty, and is essentially when a swordfighter swings their weapon with enough ferocity to create a devastating long-range slash. As the giants demonstrate, multiple characters can perform Hakoku Sovereignty together to enhance the damage inflicted.
The brief trailer shot doesn't fully do it justice, but Hakoku Sovereignty is among the strongest attacks in One Piece. The original version of this scene sees the attack cut through the ocean itself, punch a perfectly round hole right through the unsuspecting fish, and keep going into the distance.
So strong is the giants' combined assault, Dorry and Brogy still use exactly the same move in One Piece's current manga arc, around 20 years later. The fact that 1000 or so chapters have passed without Hakoku Sovereignty losing its edge speaks volumes about the ferocity of this attack.
Neither Luffy, Buggy, nor the Baroque Works underlings we'll meet in One Piece season 2 have anything quite as destructive in their respective lockers.
Dorry And Brogy's Attack Foreshadows A Future One Piece Villain
Dorry and Brogy aren't the only One Piece characters capable of using Hakoku Sovereignty, and the technique's live-action debut ominously foreshadows one of Luffy's strongest future enemies.
In the world of One Piece, the strongest four pirates are known as the Four Emperors, and at the current point in the live-action series, these are Red-Haired Shanks, Kaido, Big Mom, and Whitebeard. Despite not belonging to the giant race, Big Mom lived up to her name and spent a chunk of her childhood living among Dorry and Brogy's people on the island of Elbaph.
She developed a fascination with giants that continued deep into her piracy career, and adopted a technique called Ikoku Sovereignty based heavily on Hakoku Sovereignty. Whereas Dorry and Brogy's attack is only used to help the Straw Hat Pirates in One Piece, the Ikoku Sovereignty variant is used multiple times against Luffy and his friends, giving them a major headache. With Big Mom swinging the blade, a single hit could easily prove fatal.
Live-action One Piece won't necessarily last long enough to debut Big Mom, so fans should make the most of this eagerly-anticipated technique when it happens in season 2.
