A new era is coming for Netflix's new flagship series. Following the close of Stranger Things, there is little doubt One Piece is stepping up and taking the reins at Netflix. Luffy and his crew recently hit streaming with a new season, and to say One Piece's comeback did well puts things lightly. With millions of hours viewed to date, One Piece season two is on a high, and the show isn't done by far. Netflix's plans for One Piece season three will fully transform the original series, thrusting it into a brand-new genre.
Up until now, One Piece has been fairly straightforward as an action-adventure drama. The live-action anime got its start with Luffy in the East Blue as he set sail to find a crew. As season one went on, One Piece was more concerned with its found family and its characters than its action sequences. This move carried into season two as One Piece did some intensive world building, fleshing out the Grand Line and all the pirates Luffy's crew needs to be aware of. All of this expansion gives One Piece an impressive foundation to build off, and season three will test it by becoming a full-on action series.
The test, of course, will come from Alabasta. One Piece season two set the stage for the Straw Hat Crew to enter the desert kingdom with its rogue princess on hand. Alabasta is quietly suffering under the thumb of Crocodile, a notorious Warlord of the Sea, and Luffy is ready to fight the infamous pirate by the end of season two. One Piece season three has confirmed it will bring the Alabasta saga to life, and the combat-heavy arc will be a major departure for One Piece.
One Piece Season 3's New Genre Better Represents What The Show's Future Will Be
Up until now, One Piece has focused on smaller skirmishes, with Luffy's battle against Arlong being the show's biggest. However, the battle for Nami's freedom is so very small when compared to the war going on in Alabasta. The saga brings new combat mechanics to life with its Logia Devil Fruit, but it also questions Luffy's brute strength. Crocodile is one of the first foes Luffy fights that is inherently stronger than him, forcing the Straw Hat captain to strategize and get creative.
As for the other pirates in Luffy's crew, they face the saga's high stakes with major one-on-one fights. Crocodile employs a lot of powerful henchmen, but what's worse is his sway over the nation's people. Despite Vivi's best efforts, the people of Alabasta are tired of the war, and Crocodile's position allows him to manipulate the public. He doesn't have to lift a finger to fight the Straw Hat Crew when he can make the people do it for him. Unafraid of collateral damage, Crocodile is the worst kind of person in Luffy's mind, and their differences will make their clash in One Piece season three all the more violent.
With new characters like Portgas D. Ace brought into the mix, the Alabasta saga is an action-heavy storyline that blends politics with personal freedom. This sort of complexity is what One Piece thrives upon, so season three will be a great litmus test for what's to come. The sagas in Eiichiro Oda's hit manga only get more intense after Alabasta, so Netflix has one shot to do the story justice.
