One Piece is one of the most popular entertainment franchises in the world, and that’s not just because of its merch, anime, and live action adaptations, but also of the record-breaking manga itself — which has now officially surpassed 600 million copies in circulation. To commemorate the milestone, creator Eiichiro Oda revealed that he wrote down the true secret of the One Piece, the legendary treasure sought by Monkey D. Luffy and pirates everywhere, which has been sealed inside a small treasure chest and sunk into the ocean until the day the series ends.

The special project was unveiled in a video shared on social media, showing Eiichiro Oda seated at his desk, shrouded in darkness, carefully writing down the truth about the One Piece and Luffy. After sealing the document, he locks it inside a miniature treasure chest and sends it off to a team of divers. The chest is then enclosed in a device resembling a Log Pose and lowered into a designated area of the ocean, where it disappears beneath the waves.

Publishing company Shuesha has acknowledged One Piece has sold 600 million copies after Japanese charting company Oricon last year shared information confirming those numbers. The special project commemorating the achievement was carried out safely in collaboration with the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology(JAMSTEC) and the Cross-ministerial Strategic Innovation Promotion Program (SIP), which assisted with both deployment and filming. There are plans to recover the treasure in the future, once the true secret of the One Piece is finally revealed at the end of the series.

One Piece has been around since 1997, first debuting in Weekly Shonen Jump in August and releasing its first volume in December. Although fans have said One Piece has now officially outsold all of Superman's 18,000+ issues combined, there’s no real data to compare Superman’s circulation sales to One Piece. But that shouldn’t diminish this incredible milestone. It is an Earth-shattering number that cements One Piece as the best-selling manga of all time.

Interestingly, the celebratory video claims that this is the first time ever that Oda has written down the secret of the One Piece, previously keeping it safe in his mind. Knowing how much rides on this not being revealed too early, it's not hard to believe it. Technically, if a very brave and resourceful fan wanted to find out how the series will end, they could take a dive 650 meters deep into the ocean, but let's hope they keep it to themselves.
