He has covered everything from Marvel to the Oscars, and Marvel at the Oscars. While Michael Bay gets plenty of flak for his work on the later Transformers films — the franchise itself isn't held in high regard — the Jurassic World trilogy doesn't get nearly as much criticism. The trilogy saw a marked decline in critical reception over the course of its run, and ended with one of the worst-reviewed big-budget studio movies of the decade. However, such is the IP's reputation that even after being ravaged by critics, Jurassic World Dominion passed the coveted $1 billion mark at the worldwide box office. It remains one of the worst-reviewed films to do so, and is currently ranked 59th on the 59-movie list of blockbusters to have grossed more than $1 billion globally. Along with its two predecessors, Jurassic World Dominion is heading to a new streamer in March.
The movie was released in 2022, four years after Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, which itself was released three years after Jurassic World. The third installment brought back lead actors Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard, and reunited the three central stars of the original Jurassic Park trilogy from the 1990s — Laura Dern, Sam Neill, and Jeff Goldblum. Jurassic World Dominion also featured returning actors Justice Smith and BD Wong from previous installments, and introduced new characters played by DeWanda Wise and Mamoudou Athie. Produced on a reported budget of $465 million, the same as that of the second installment, Jurassic World Dominion concluded its run just $4 million above the $1 billion milestone.
How Low Is 'Jurassic World Dominion's Rotten Tomatoes Score?
This is no mean feat; it ranks above Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer and Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone on the all-time worldwide list. It isn't in the same league as those movies, in terms of critical reception. Directed by Colin Trevorrow, who also directed the trilogy's first film, Jurassic World Dominion holds a 29% score on the aggregator Rotten Tomatoes. The website's consensus reads, "Jurassic World Dominion might be a bit of an improvement over its immediate predecessors in some respects, but this franchise has lumbered a long way down from its classic start." Universal subsequently decided to reboot the franchise again, with Gareth Edwards' Jurassic World Rebirth. Released last year, the movie grossed under $900 million worldwide and earned mixed reviews.
You can watch Pratt's Jurassic World trilogy on Netflix starting in March. Stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
