K-dramas and shows like Dark, Valeria, Lupin and An Astrological Guide to Broken Hearts have taken my Netflix watchlist on a global tour, and it's been full of hidden gems. I'll admit that I often cheat and click dubbed versions over the subtitled experience, but it's part of the appeal of choosing your own streaming adventure.
Way before the platform rolled out La Casa de Papel -- aka Money Heist -- I was a fan of its foreign-language content. And I found a new international heist-themed story to follow: The Green Glove Gang. A Polish series first released in 2022, the show has drama, comedy and edge-of-your-seat stakes that make you root for the thieves.
The show stars Magdalena Kuta as Zuzanna, Malgorzata Potocka as Kinga, Anna Romantowska as Alicja and Miroslaw Zbrojewicz ...as the frustrated Commissioner Alfred.
Unlike other robbery-themed stories, The Green Glove Gang does not go through the familiar beats of a cat-and-mouse saga. Think Golden Girls vibes with a crime slant. Season 1 introduces the thieves: Three women in their golden years -- Zuzanna, Kinga and Alicja -- go on the run after pulling off a job that goes left. They wind up hiding out in a nursing home where it's easy for them to blend in -- until they don't. As they pretend to be afflicted with various conditions and settle in, they decide their ruse must be carried out for much longer than they planned.
Kinga, Zuza and Alicja form bonds with some of residents, partying, sharing and looking out for many of them. Kinga and Alicja even find romance in the middle of their fugitive run. But things get more interesting when the trio uncover a larger mystery at the senior home that's affecting all the elders. Well-versed in carrying out covert, calculated operations, the women set out to right some wrongs by outsmarting those involved in a nefarious scheme in town. Their heroic efforts don't go unnoticed, and they not only earn the admiration from their fellow residents, but the ire of criminals looking for whoever's responsible for unraveling their plot. These three are the not the first suspects that the bad guys look to.
As the authorities dive into the search for the green glove gang, you want them to get away. You'll also want all the seniors in the home to be cared for properly. It makes you think about how some elderly citizens are lonely and who don't have family to check in on them or their affairs. Some are abused and taken advantage of, and others need serious care. Leaning on each other for friendship and support (and crime-solving skills), the characters in the series find a new lease on life when Zuza, Kinga and Alicja show up.
There are moments that tug on the heartstrings, but this show isn't all about that. Because law enforcement is on their tails, the green-gloved thieves have to stay on their toes and try not to blow their cover or get their newfound friends caught up as accomplices in their heist drama. For them, it's a delicate dance to avoid getting caught, but at times it's hilarious to see how things shake out when snitches, villains and cops are involved. Run, ladies, run! This nursing home will never be the same.
Once you breeze through the first installment, you may not be surprised to find these ladies get swept up in a new heist for season 2. This time, they're working under duress on a robber-for-hire gig that they'd rather not do. Dig into it for yourself. Season 1 of The Green Glove Gang hit in 2022, and season 2 dropped this past July. Add this suspenseful crime comedy to your binge list and be ready to laugh, sleuth and cheer for this mature crew of thieves.
