Eiichiro Oda has finally revealed the past of One Piece's most mysterious marine admiral and there is a chance Luffy could gain a very powerful ally in him in the future. Fans have long questioned Admiral Fujitora's past and his allegiance to the World Government and the latest SBS has only fueled these speculations.
In the SBS of volume #110, as translated by Artur (newworldartur on X), Oda reveals that Admiral Fujitora was once a major war criminal and formerly served as the head of the military in a nation in the Grand Line known as the Blue Kingdom until it was eradicated in war. Later, after losing all his money gambling, Fujitora was forced to work as a bodyguard until the World Government paid off his debts and conscripted him into the Navy.

SBS #110 Reveals Issho's War-Stricken Past
Ever since his first appearance during the Dressrosa Arc, Fujitora, also known as Issho, has joined the ever-growing list of enigmas in One Piece. His unique and righteous sense of justice coupled with his actions towards Luffy in Dressrosa make him one of the most well-liked Marines in the series, while his supposedly self-imposed blindness has long intrigued fans as to his past.

One Piece's English db makes one minor change to a highly emotional moment in the Dressrosa Arc making it even better than in the sub.
Over the years, many fans have speculated Issho could hail from Wano due to his choice of clothing. However, SBS #110 confirms that Issho hails from the West Blue instead. It isn't clear when or why he left the West Blue to join the Blue Kingdom's military or what war could have eradicated the nation, but Issho's strength is all but clear from his former position.
Interestingly, Fujitora's unfortunate history with gambling may have even been foreshadowed during his very introduction in One Piece in chapter #701 where the Straw Hats encountered him at a roulette table.
That said, Issho could still have one interesting connection to Wano, specifically one of its most legendary samurai. The SBS section of volume #110 was also accompanied by an illustration of Admiral Fujitora as a child and many fans were quick to note the similarities between his clothing and that of Ryuma's zombie. Both sport a white yukata with a similar print along the edges, leading many fans to believe Fujitora could be a descendant of Ryuma and, by extension, a member of the Shimotsuki Clan. However, it is entirely possible the choice of print could be just a coincidence.
Admiral Fujitora's Desertion From the Navy Seems All But Inevitable
Fujitora Becoming Luffy's Ally Could Level the Playing Field with Blackbeard
Fujitora's past as a war criminal and the fact that the World Government took him in despite being well aware of this fact is quite baffling. It is even more unclear where exactly the World Government draws the line between being a criminal. From advocating against the World System to recently allowing the Revolutionaries to escape Mariejois, Fujitora has already openly opposed the World Government quite a few times and made it clear that he does not agree with their policies.
The latter of these incidents is easily the most grievous, and it might not be too long until the Navy considers Fujitora more trouble than he is worth. The fact that Fujitora did not willingly join the Navy coupled with recent events and the revelations made in Vegapunk's message also point to Fujitora abandoning the Navy after learning the truth about the World Government's heinous activities.
In SBS #106, Oda even reveals that Fujitora's specific brand of justice is Honorable Justice, which would surely not see the World Government's recent destruction of Lulusia as righteous. Fujitora has even previously expressed his disdain for the World Government's tendency to act like a god, which is precisely what they have been doing as of late.
Does the World Government think itself to be God?
— Fujitora, chapter #747.
However, making an enemy out of Fujitora could prove to be a fatal mistake for the World Government, especially if Fujitora ends up allying with the Revolutionaries or even Luffy and the Straw Hats for that matter. Fujitora already appears to have a good opinion of Luffy since Dressrosa and joining Luffy's side would also level the field with Blackbeard, who has Kuzan, another former Admiral, by his side. Overall, Fujitora's fate in One Piece will certainly be very interesting to behold and is sure to add to the chaos of the Final Saga.
One Piece is available on Manga Plus and Viz Media.
