Filmmaker Geremy Jasper is trading in rap for rock for his latest film “O’Dessa,” the director and writer’s follow-up to the 2017 indie darling “Patti Cake$.”
“O’Dessa” is a post-apocalyptic rock opera and musical-fantasy film starring Sadie Sink as a farm girl setting off on an epic quest to recover a cherished family heirloom. The first trailer for the film shows a big and sweeping saga with Sink and the rest of the cast singing their hearts out. Sink has a punk look and can also be seen in the trailer rocking out on a makeshift, DIY guitar in front of a band of masked horn players.
“Stranger Things” fans will recognize Sink as skater girl-turned-huge-Kate-Bush-fan Max Mayfield. They will also recognize an Upside Down-like moment in the “O’Dessa” trailer.
Sink stars in “O’Dessa” alongside Kelvin Harrison Jr., Murray Bartlett, and Regina Hall. The film is being released by Searchlight Pictures and is dropping exclusively on Hulu on March 13. It will first make its world premiere at SXSW on March 8 at the Paramount Theater in Austin.
The full synopsis for the film says that O’Dessa’s journey “leads her to a strange and dangerous city where she meets her one true love — but in order to save his soul, she must put the power of destiny and song to the ultimate test.”
That power of destiny and song was apparently not enough to get “O’Dessa” a theatrical release.
Sink is soon moving on from her “Stranger Things” run, which for her began in Season 2. The fifth and final season of “Stranger Things” will debut this summer on Netflix; the streamer is again splitting the season into two parts. The Duffer Brothers kicked off the show’s farewell tour at January’s Next on Netflix event.
“This is our biggest and most ambitious season yet. It’s like eight blockbuster movies,” Ross Duffer said. “At the same time, we think it’s our most personal story. It was super intense and emotional to film — for us and for our actors,” Matt Duffer added.
Jasper and Jason Binnick, who also worked on “Patti Cake$,” wrote and produced 16 original songs for “O’Dessa.” Jasper was a DGA and Film Independent Spirit Awards nominee for “Patti Cake$,” earning acclaim for his songs that helped make Danielle Macdonald a breakout star.
Michael Gottwald and Noah Stahl produced the film. Check out the first trailer for “O’Dessa” below.
