Glamorous sights and rough feelings are related to today's Connections puzzle, with both texture and appearance forming patterns for players to find. Some words seemingly have no bond, making the solution hard to find without some clues to guide your way. However, even struggling players might identify the visual similarities between some phrases, and come to the right answers on their own.
You only have four chances to make a mistake before losing a game of Connections, limiting your options as you play. The best advice for any day of Connections is to take your time to understand many possible contexts one phrase could mean besides what seems obvious. Similar to the Letter Boxed NYT puzzles, you have to find patterns to correctly discover the right path.
Today's Connections Category Hints
August 18 #1165
When trying to discover any of today's categories, imagine how certain words appear or feel to interact with. This includes viewing how the phrases themselves are structured, as there can be hidden patterns in their organization. Start with the longer or more familiar terms first, as they will give you a better foundation to start with when searching for clues.
If you want to know some hints regarding today's puzzle categories, check out these clues below:
- One category is about things you would notice during a big celebration for a major motion picture's debut.
- One category is about words structured the same way using their first letters.
- One category is about objects that share the same color when viewed.
- One category is about different items with the same texture when you touch them.
If you want to go all out with some of your clue-searching, you should look at the category names to get some extra help. There are also spoilers for each category if you find yourself needing to solve a single category to finish up.

LIMOUSINE |
PAPARAZZI |
RED CARPET |
VELVET ROPE |
This category stood out to me right away during today's Connections, mainly for how PAPARAZZI and LIMOUSINE were two words I associate with events involving celebrities. With that logic, RED CARPET and VELVET ROPE also represent a fancy event where celebrities will be present. You don't need to know the movie-related context here, as just imagining the type of visuals around an event with high-profile people will suffice.

PETROLEUM JELLY |
POETIC JUSTICE |
PRACTICAL JOKE |
PRIVATE JET |
It's easy to mistake PETROLEUM JELLY and words like TRAFFIC CONE as being related, as both terms could refer to roads. Personally, I mistook PRIVATE JET with LIMOUSINE in the prior category, but it was putting POETIC JUSTICE and PRACTICAL JOKE together to make sense out of this section of the puzzle. All four terms have a "P" in their first word and a "J" in their second, creating a structure with obvious similarities.

BASKETBALL |
ORANGUTAN |
SWEET POTATO |
TRAFFIC CONE |
Both ORANGUTAN and SWEET POTATO are words that stand out in the Connections today, as they are specific words without many other meanings. Each idea has no relationship with anything else in the puzzle on the surface, until you realize each concept has the same color most people see. Any BASKETBALL or TRAFFIC CONE is just as orange as an ORANGUTAN or SWEET POTATO, giving you a clear category to solve.

COWBOY COFFEE |
FILM NOIR |
FLYERS MASCOT |
SANDPAPER |
Whenever you look at a word like SANDPAPER, its texture should be the first thing that comes to mind. The rough feeling of that item is the hint you need to include COWBOY COFFEE, which has a similar sensation. Although the film grain of FILM NOIR being rough or gritty is harder to put with these words, looking up the name of the FLYERS MASCOT should give this category away immediately for today's Connections.
