Nvidia is back on top. The GPU giant’s market capitalization has once again surpassed Apple’s, reclaiming its position as the most valuable public company on the planet.
A month of trading places
The back-and-forth started on July 17, when Apple momentarily seized the crown with an estimated market cap of roughly $4.88 trillion compared to Nvidia’s $4.86 trillion. That marked Apple’s first time atop the rankings since April 2025.
Then on July 27, Apple widened its lead after Nvidia shares dropped approximately 5% in a single session. Apple closed that day as the world’s most valuable firm with a valuation estimated between $4.9 and $4.95 trillion.
As of late July, Nvidia’s market cap sat around $4.72 trillion, and the company has now pushed back ahead of Apple to reclaim the top ranking.
How Nvidia got here
Nvidia first became the world’s most valuable company by overtaking Microsoft back in June 2025, riding an unprecedented wave of demand for its graphics processing units.
By October 2025, Nvidia became the first company in history to hit a $5 trillion market cap.
Nvidia’s GPUs historically played a central role in cryptocurrency mining operations. When Ethereum moved to proof-of-stake and GPU mining demand cooled, Nvidia pivoted to artificial intelligence training and inference. Today, Nvidia’s GPUs are the de facto standard for training large language models and running AI workloads at scale.
What investors should watch
Apple’s brief periods of dominance in July coincided with moments when investors rotated toward perceived stability. Nvidia’s 5% single-day drop on July 27 is a reminder that sentiment can shift quickly in the semiconductor space.
Alphabet, trailing closely behind Nvidia and Apple in the market cap rankings, adds another AI-heavy competitor to the mix.
Decentralized compute networks, GPU-as-a-service platforms, and AI-crypto crossover projects all depend on the same supply chains that Nvidia dominates. With both companies hovering in the $4.7 to $4.9 trillion range, the title of world’s largest company could change hands again before the summer is over.
