Based on the original 2001 game, Silent Hill 2 has made a comeback not in the form of a remaster but rather in the form of a successful remake. Developed by Bloober Team (Layers of Fear, Blair Witch) and produced by Konami, Silent Hill 2 follows James Sutherland as he traverses into the horror realm of Silent Hill. But with Silent Hill 2 amassing such great success and fulfilling every fan's expectations, is another Silent Hill remake in order?

The SH2 remake has sold nearly 2 million copies, according to the official Silent Hill X account. And due to that success, many fans argue that Silent Hill 1 is next in line to be remade, considering the franchise's success stems from the original PlayStation game. However, Konami and Bloober Team should focus on creating a new story based on the trials and tribulations of Silent Hill. The success of Silent Hill has been built upon the tortured souls of Harry Mason, James Sutherland, and Heather Mason. It's time to put these characters and their stories to rest until Konami and Bloober Team can prove that Silent Hill is worth reviving.

Pros Of A New Silent Hill Game Instead Of A Remake

A New Story Will Attract Old and New Fans

It's common knowledge that fans of classic games are not always happy to see their favorite game remade. This has been a common occurrence for Silent Hill 2, which led to fears of a remake by Bloober Team since one of its famous titles, Blair Witch, did not exceed expectations. But Bloober Team is a master at atmosphere, and many fans were intrigued by the reveal of a Silent Hill 2 remake.

Silent Hill 2 has since proven to be a massive success and the original is considered one of the best horror games ever, and now eyes are on Bloober Team to see if the studio will make another Silent Hill. However, while Silent Hill 2 was deemed a success, there is no guarantee that Silent Hill 1 or Silent Hill 3 will do just as well. This is especially the case since Silent Hill 1 relies heavily on the dark atmosphere and pixelated graphics to tell its story and reveal its monsters. Without a Silent Hill 1 remake, there cannot be a Silent Hill 3 remake.

Due to these reasons alone, Konami and Bloober Team are better off creating an entirely new Silent Hill that will evoke new and old fans of the Silent Hill franchise. This is better than risking a remake of a Silent Hill game that many are opposed to or might not work well as a remake in general. After all, not every game needs a remake, and certainly not every remake is made with the same vision as the original.

Cons Of A Silent Hill Game Instead Of Another SH Remake

A New Game May Not Hold Up to P.T.'s Original Anticipation

P.T., otherwise known as Silent Hills, was the last anticipated original Silent Hill horror game. A demo was released back in 2004, and it starred The Walking Dead's Norman Reedus. P.T. featured a dark, atmospheric level inside a house that the player would walk through. They started at one end of the house, ended up at another, and walked through a door to repeat this process again. However, the twist was that each new walkthrough of the house led to more and more disturbing paranormal occurrences.

P.T. was proceeded to be canceled by Konami, though an explanation was never given. After P.T.'s cancelation in 2015, Hideo Kojima - one of P.T.'s creators - left Konami. It's been predicted Kojima's departure was a reason behind P.T.'s sudden and unfortunate cancelation. It's almost been a decade since the cancelation of P.T., and fans are still hung over the loss of a potentially terrific horror game. A new game could potentially frustrate viewers should it not meet the expectations or anticipations that P.T. once—and still—has, leading to an unsuccessful game launch as a result.

Why A New Silent Hill Game Would Be Better

Originality Over Something Fans Have Already Seen

Welcome to Silent Hill sign in Silent Hill

Though the original Silent Hill games will always be classics, there is always room and time to remake these games. Instead, Silent Hill should consider a Resident Evil approach, releasing a new Resident Evil game every other major title drop. This not only keeps old fans attracted to the franchise, but it also invites newer players who may not have liked previous installments or don't want to worry about playing order.

It's time to return to Silent Hill , not just in remakes, but in new disturbingly atmospheric horror games.

A new game does in fact pose many risks, and those who are still sour and bitter over the loss of what P.T. could have been may not want to support Konami after its prior mistakes. Still, Silent Hill has been a major horror game franchise, leading in sales beside other franchises like Resident Evil. It's time to return to Silent Hill, not just in remakes, but in new disturbingly atmospheric horror games. Only then will Silent Hill be revived.
