No Man's Sky's 10th Anniversary Update is a Massive Overhaul of Space Itself

The Cosmos update adds space hulks, orbital bases, asteroid belts, space station ownership, alliances and much more.

No Man’s Sky is getting dangerously close to becoming every game at once.

Just this year, Hello Games has given players a gravity gun that lets them rip chunks of debris out of wreckage and fling them around, added an entire Pokémon-inspired monster-raising and battling system, and continued the steady stream of updates that has transformed the game far beyond what it was when it launched 10 years ago. Now, the studio is taking that transformation one enormous step further: It’s overhauling space itself.

The new Cosmos update, arriving Wednesday as part of No Man’s Sky’s 10th anniversary, is one of the biggest updates the game has received yet. And unlike many of the updates that have come before it, this one is focused on a part of No Man’s Sky that Hello Games says has barely changed since launch: the space between all those planets.

What's new in the Cosmos update?

Cosmos adds a new star map packed with points of interest, massive space hulks that players can strip for salvage, new space outposts, biological wrecks, and asteroid belts filled with valuable resources. Some of those asteroids are even large enough to land on and build a base.

Then there are orbital bases, which can be constructed anywhere in space. Players can build floating restaurants, military installations, truck stops or whatever else they can dream up, with planets looming below them as they watch the universe pass by.

No Man’s Sky is also finally letting players own space stations. Stations can be built, decorated, and customized inside and out, turning them into personal headquarters or gathering places for friends. Players can even establish their own alliances and work together to build networks of stations while competing on new leaderboards.
