The Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer delivered 40,597 units in June, representing an 8% sequential increase from May. Throughout the entire second quarter, NIO shipped 107,658 vehicles — marginally surpassing internal projections and climbing 49.4% compared to the prior year period.

The share price decline appears to stem from elevated investor expectations heading into the announcement. NIO had rallied 44% during the preceding 12-month period before Wednesday’s session, suggesting positive developments were largely anticipated by the market.

[[LINK_START_2]]NIO[[LINK_END_2]] wasn’t the only player delivering solid performance metrics. XPeng and Li Auto simultaneously released June data, with the trio collectively shipping 111,618 vehicles — a 16% year-over-year increase representing the strongest monthly expansion since March.

XPeng’s June deliveries totaled 40,126 units, climbing 25% sequentially and 16% annually. The company’s second quarter figure of 103,295 vehicles aligned precisely with guidance. XPeng shares advanced 2% during premarket trading, standing in stark contrast to NIO’s weakness.

Li Auto emerged as the laggard among the group. June deliveries reached 30,895 vehicles, declining 7% month-over-month and 15% year-over-year. While its Q2 performance of 98,330 units approached guidance targets, deteriorating annual comparisons have pressured the stock — Li Auto shares have plummeted 56% over the trailing 12 months.

Year-to-date through June, the three manufacturers have collectively delivered 550,572 vehicles, representing approximately 7% growth versus the comparable 2025 timeframe.

BYD’s International Expansion Accelerates as Chinese Market Weakens

BYD recorded sales of 397,292 passenger vehicles during June, with 201,472 units being fully electric models. Overall vehicle sales expanded 5% annually, though pure EV sales contracted 3%.

The automotive giant has been directing approximately 40% of production volume to international markets as Chinese domestic appetite softens. China’s overall new vehicle sales contracted roughly 7% during the first quarter of 2026, according to Citi analyst Jeff Chung’s research.

BYD’s Hong Kong-listed shares were unavailable for trading Wednesday due to a regional public holiday. Prior to the holiday, the stock had declined 24% year-to-date and 41% over the past year.

On the innovation front, NIO deployed the newest iteration of its NIO WorldModel autonomous driving platform to over 700,000 users. The manufacturer claims industry-first status for simultaneously operating parallel development processes across both universal and proprietary semiconductor architectures.
