Nikon has released a few more details about the upcoming v2.0 firmware for its video-focused ZR, which it says will be the first major update for the camera.
Firmware V2 for the camera is still scheduled to release by the end of the year,
Mitchell ClarkWhen the company announced this firmware update was coming in September, the main feature it touted was the ability to shoot Log3G10 in the H.265 mode. The Log curve, developed by Red, is more sophisticated than Nikon’s own N-Log, and has more LUTs available for it, but, until now, you’ve only been able to shoot it when recording in the R3D NE Raw format. Being able to record it in a much more storage-friendly format that requires less post-processing will be a nice change for ZR owners.
The company also highlighted the ability to control how much high ISO noise reduction the camera applies when you’re shooting in H.265 using a Log profile. Nikon also says the update will have “new processing” that “suppresses frame-by-frame fluctuations in black level, reducing flicker that tends to occur in low-light conditions and in dark areas of the frame.” That last bit sounds a lot like what it had to deal with on the Z6III.
There are a few other small tweaks coming in the update
There are a few other small tweaks coming in the update, such as the ability to assign things like white balance color temp, ISO and more to the command dials, and to assign LUT view assist to a function button so you can turn it on without using the touchscreen. Nikon also says you’ll be able to apply a LUT to your HDMI out, so you can have an easier-to-understand preview on your monitor, even if you’re shooting in Log and your screen doesn’t support applying LUTs on its own.
