Nicole Richie and Joel Madden's Two Teenagers Make Their Red Carpet Debut
Nicole Richie is getting candid about her first date with husband Joel Madden.
The Simple Life star revealed that she told a little lie when she first started dating the Good Charlotte singer in 2006, and she didn't come clean about it until "a few years later," after they had already had kids.
Noting that Joel "hates" when she recounts the story, Nicole recalled that he asked her if she watched The Wire while inviting her over to his house to watch the HBO series.
"Never seen The Wire in my life," she told Alex Cooper on the Dec. 11 episode of Call Her Daddy. "I go, ‘The Wire is my favorite show.' Obviously, The Wire is an amazing show. I’m not dissing The Wire, but OK, I’m a girl. He just, like, threw me into season 3. There’s no music. And I, for a very long time, pretended, like, I watched and loved The Wire."
The Paris & Nicole: The Encore star added that the couple—who share daughter Harlow, 16, and son Sparrow, 15—has "since rewatched The Wire" from the beginning together.
Nicole, 43, also recalled how she started dating Joel, 45, in the first place, noting that they were set up by a mutual friend and quickly hit it off.
"I had not dabbled with musicians. But our friend set us up not in a serious way at all,” she said. “She was like, ‘You’re single and he’s single, so this is probably not going to be serious, but you guys should hang out.’ We did."

In fact, she said that it was "on.com" between them almost immediately, and it was actually Joel's reserved nature that quickly won her over.
"Joel is very shy," the Candidly Nicole star shared. "The first night I met him, he actually didn’t speak to me, and I was like, ‘This is my husband.'"

And, while the couple has maintained privacy around their family life, Nicole recently shared some insight into the lives of their teenage children.
"I just so clearly remember what it’s like to be a teenager,” she told Glamour earlier this month. "It feels like it happened yesterday for me.”
Because of that, the Good News alum didn't want to avoid the topic of her hard partying younger years with her kids.
"They know everything I did,” she went on. “I knew before I had them that I was going to have to be transparent with them about who I was. And I’ve actually found freedom in that. I didn’t want my kids having some big discovery about me."
