The former NFL star shared Dec. 13 that he is a “cancer survivor,” explaining he was just released from the hospital after a six-day stay following a major procedure.
“I’m nursing myself back,” he said during a 16-minute Instagram Live. “It’s gonna be a little tough road with some chemo and radiation, but like I said, man, I’m good. I’m here with my family.”
In addition to his family—which includes his wife Lydia Moss and their daughter Lordes-Randi, as well as his children Sydney, Thaddeus, Lexi, Montigo, Senali, Sylee and Lyric from former relationships—Randy, 47, thanked his “prayer warriors” for their support.
“I didn’t think I would ever be in a position like this, as healthy as I thought I was,” he continued. “But things took a turn for the worse and I asked for my prayer warriors, I asked for my family to be able to surround me and put their hands on me through this trying time and y’all best believe your boy came through.”
Though the Pro Football Hall of Famer—who retired from the San Francisco 49ers in 2012—didn’t disclose the type of cancer he is recovering from, he described the symptoms he experienced leading up to a bile duct procedure, telling his fans to “not be macho” and take their health seriously.
“It’s by the grace of god that my liver started acting up and then my urine started being discolored,” Randy shared. “I had to go in and have a stent put in my liver for the doctors to be able to look inside to find out where the cancer was.”
Following a Whipple procedure—an operation commonly performed to treat pancreatic cancer that removes “the head of the pancreas, the first part of the small intestine, the gallbladder and the bile duct,” according to the Mayo Clinic—Randy said of his cancer that his doctors “found it and got it.”
And while he described the last few weeks as a “trying time,” he emphasized his gratitude for those that have supported him in his health battle.

“To all my teammates, to all my fans, to all the prayer warriors, to all the Moss fans, god bless you all,” Randy said. “Thanks for the prayers. You’ll hear back from me soon.”
