Microsoft is aiming to change this around with the XBOX brand. Speaking of the brand, it's now the capital XBOX, as the new CEO is attempting to make their mark. So far, things are going well, with a decrease in Xbox Game Pass pricing and a vow to deliver more games.
The delay of Fable stings a bit, but otherwise, there are more things in the works, and Forza Horizon 6 just dropped. It's not a bad time to be an XBOX fan, though a lot of trust will need to be built via the new leadership. In the meantime, you can take a gander at a new piece of XBOX hardware coming very soon.
Freshly unveiled on the official site, there's a new piece of Xbox hardware in town, and it's looking pretty sweet so far.
Newly announced by Microsoft and ROG, the ROG XBOX Ally X20 is expected to be released this year, though exact details were not provided as of publication. It's an updated model of what Microsoft calls the XBOX handheld, featuring a new OLED screen.
Here's the main draw for the OLED model: "Step into a wider world of play. By slimming the top bezel, we’ve maximized the FHD display to a more expansive 7.4 inches, keeping you fully locked into the action while maintaining a sleek, portable form factor. Brand new for the ROG XBOX Ally X20, this Nebula HDR Display features an OLED panel with breathtaking visual depth and a peak brightness of 1400 nits, while the ultra-fast 120Hz refresh rate and FreeSync Premium Pro support ensures every movement is effortlessly smooth."
In terms of other enhancements, you'll get upgraded TMR sensors on the sticks, as well as ergonomic buttons and a transforming d-pad. Note that Microsoft hasn't fully provided a price yet, but expect it to be pricey, and likely more than the $999.99 ROG Xbox Ally X model. As of now, you'll also need to pick up a limited-edition model with AR glasses, though that could change.
Right now, the handheld market is pretty pricey in general. Valve just announced that the Steam Deck is increasing in price, and the top-tier OLED model now costs nearly $1,000. That's roughly twice as expensive as a Switch 2, as this current handheld landscape continues to play out.
Whoever wins, the gaming community loses out, price-wise, given the current state of the world economy. Hardware pricing is going up as generations pass, which is the exact opposite of previous generations. Hopefully, this new Xbox hardware will be less than $2,000 when all is said and done.
