Jared's first console was the PS1, wherein he fell for Spider-Man, Spyro the Dragon, and Crash Bandicoot.
Red Dead Redemption 2 may not be as exhaustively enormous as, say, a game like The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim or The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, but its story is rather long for an action-adventure game, averaging about ~50 hours in order to roll credits, and more than triple that for 100% completion. Even more time can then be spent simply exploring Red Dead Redemption 2’s open world and experiencing unanticipated interactions with random NPCs, with players choosing how smoothly these interactions go.
For instance, there are countless videos online where players have made Red Dead Redemption 2’s Arthur Morgan hogtie someone and drag them behind his horse as they ride off into the sunset, much less leave that sad, sorry individual helpless on railroad tracks. Now, NPCs will have a lot more to say about how players greet them in one of Red Dead Redemption 2’s most ambitious mods.
Over on Nexus Mods, a new Red Dead Redemption 2 mod from user nicklovin99 has functionally given Rockstar’s Wild West epic its own Nemesis System-esque feature akin to the one that pedestaled Monolith’s Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor (the same one that has accumulated dust and cobwebs since Warner Bros. secured the patent for it). Apparently, this bafflingly gives every NPC a “name, traits, quirks, a trade, a faith, a family, and a life story,” with players repeatedly running into these same people.
Plus, there are reportedly eight outlaw outfits established in this mod, titled “enRAGE,” with these factions all at war with one another. Interrogations can gain you new information on the hierarchies of these factions, which seem to operate similarly to those in Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor, with underlings and superiors who can shift rank and fill lapses caused by the player killing one of their members.
Overall, this appears to be much more comprehensive and elaborate than even the Nemesis System in Middle-earth: Shadow of War. Fortunately, this mod doesn’t interfere with Red Dead Redemption 2’s story missions, awaiting players as an extracurricular side activity in the open world.
It’s easy to imagine how this mod, depending on how big and expansive it might get as it receives updates, could become a whole expansion in and of itself. And, knowing that the wait for Red Dead Redemption 3 could be excruciatingly long following the wait we just had to endure in order to finally have Grand Theft Auto 6 launching less than a month away, this mod could be exactly what fans need to tide themselves over in the meantime. Then, if or when the hype for Grand Theft Auto 6 dies down, it probably won’t be much longer until a Nemesis System mod arrives for it, too.
nicklovin99’s “enRAGE” is in early access right now due to the numerous bugs players are sure to discover in this mod, but it’s bound to be one of the most replayable and popular Red Dead Redemption 2 mods nonetheless. The mod is evidence of how profoundly significant Middle-earth Shadow of Mordor and Middle-earth: Shadow of War’s Nemesis Systems are, and Red Dead Redemption 2 is only one of infinite open-world games that could benefit greatly from their influence.
