New Onyx Storm Reveal May Confirm A Mira Sorrengail Theory That Would Be A Huge Relief After Iron Flame

1 week ago 9

The release of Onyx Storm is just a couple of weeks away, and Rebecca Yarros' latest tease may confirm a Mira Sorrengail theory that would be a huge relief after Iron Flame. A lot happens at the end of Iron Flame, with Lilith Sorrengail sacrificing herself and Xaden becoming venin. Big developments like this raise the stakes for the next Fourth Wing sequel, which seems guaranteed to break readers' hearts all over again. Fortunately, one Onyx Storm theory looks likely to be true now — and it could save us from one potential heartbreak.

In the midst of all the chaos happening at the end of Iron Flame, Violet notes that her sister, Mira, has disappeared. This is an odd detail to include, made stranger by the fact that their mother has just died. Mira should be there for her siblings, so her absence leaves a sense of foreboding heading into Onyx Storm. But Yarros shared a new quote from Onyx Storm to her Instagram, and it suggests the least worrisome theory about Mira's whereabouts could be correct.

Rebecca Yarros' New Onyx Storm Tease Confirms We're Getting Lilith Sorrengail's Journals

The Quote Suggests The Book's Epigraphs Will Feature Them

Yarros has been teasing Onyx Storm through Instagram posts, and her latest features a quote that comes from the "journal of Captain Lilith Sorrengail." The quote itself is intriguing, reminding us how little patience Violet's mother has for negotiations and diplomacy — with the caption suggesting Violet may adapt a similar approach. What's more interesting, however, is what this quote means for Onyx Storm. Fourth Wing and Iron Flame both utilize journal entries and other correspondences as epigraphs, and it seems Onyx Storm will feature some of Lilith's writings.

10 Onyx Storm Theories I Hope The Next Fourth Wing Book Confirms

There are so many theories about what could happen next in The Empyrean Series, but I hope Onyx Storm confirms these predictions when it debuts.

Given the distant and strained relationship between Violet and her mother, readers don't get a clear picture of Lilith's history or motives throughout the first two Empyrean books. The inclusion of her journal entries in Onyx Storm will help flesh out her character in further depth, even after her end in Iron Flame. It could also shed light on her relationship with Violet's father, answering some of the biggest questions we have about the Sorrengail family after the first two books.

Violet's Sister Probably Went To Save Her Mother's Journals

On the heels of Mira's absence at the end of Iron Flame, fan theories about Violet's sister began surfacing — and one suggests she left to rescue her mother's things before they could be confiscated and burned. In the Empyrean universe, the dead's belongings are supposed to be burned rather than saved. However, Mira may realize that her mother's journals and correspondence are useful assets in the coming war. She may have gone to retrieve them on the heels of Lilith's death, which would explain why they're present in Onyx Storm.

Onyx Storm comes out on January 21, 2025.

Mira has flouted the rules about burning the belongings of the dead before, using the Book of Brennan to get through her time at Basgiath War College. Mira having no qualms about this means she'd be willing to do the same with her mother's journals, especially knowing the stakes of the war against the venin. She's also clever and good in a crisis, so this turn of events would make a lot of sense for Mira's character. It'd certainly be preferable to the other directions Onyx Storm could take her in.

Mira Going After Lilith's Journals Would Be A Huge Relief After Iron Flame's Ending

It's Better Than The Other Possible Reasons For Mira's Absence

If Mira saved Lilith Sorrengail's journals, it would be a huge relief. After all, the alternative explanations for Mira's disappearance would be far more heartbreaking. Other theories suggest sinister reasons for her absence, from her being abducted by the enemy to her actively working with them. The former could lead to another big tragedy in Onyx Storm, which is already poised to be an emotional roller coaster for Violet and Xaden. Killing another one of Violet's family members so soon after her mother could feel like overkill, and it would distract Violet from what she needs to do.

Only Onyx Storm can answer where Mira was at the end of Iron Flame, but Yarros' recent post offers hope that she won't let Violet down like that.

Having Mira be a traitor would also be a devastating blow — and not necessarily one readers would be on board with. While Yarros could likely pull it off with a few twists and turns, it would remove one of Violet's biggest supports in The Empyrean Series. It would also feel out of character, while having someone more secretive, like Brennan, fill this role would fit better with everything we've seen so far. Only Onyx Storm can answer where Mira was at the end of Iron Flame, but Yarros' recent post offers hope that she won't let Violet down like that.
