The iPad mini 7 isn’t just a compact tablet – it’s the world’s best digital notetaking device.

In many ways a very good tablet, but without doubt a least-possible update that’s primarily designed to make the 2024 iPad Mini support Apple Intelligence. Which isn’t here yet.

Apple's iPad mini 7 is still pretty great, but it's not the most exciting upgrade.

The iPad mini 7 is a great update, offering excellent performance and battery life while retaining its predecessor's vibrant display and portable design. Though it keeps the portrait-oriented front camera and is incompatible with Apple Pencil 2, this tablet’s strengths outweigh its flaws. The iPad mini 7 delivers the full iPad experience, only on a smaller device.

The 2024 iPad mini is a solid and necessary update to the best small tablet on the market. It still delivers the full iPad experience in a compact package. A compact but full-featured iPad.

For newcomers or anyone with an older Mini, this is otherwise a great tiny tablet. With a modern chip that supports the latest software smarts and accessories, the iPad Mini has been future-proofed for the next few years.

There isn’t a better small tablet on the market than the iPad Mini 7. Apple’s latest dinky slate might not be a huge upgrade if you picked up the previous model, but its fast internals and support for the forthcoming Apple intelligence still make it a worthy buy.

The whole pitch for the new Mini, aside from the fact that it’s the iPad Mini, is that it’s the smallest iPad made for Apple Intelligence. Apple Intelligence better be a hell of an upgrade because, without it, the new Mini isn’t much of an upgrade at all.

What’s great about the iPad mini, ultimately, is also what limits it. It’s a small iPad with plenty of power. It fits in places other iPads just don’t. Depending on what you want to use an iPad for, it might very well be the perfect iPad.

From this perspective, I don’t need the iPad mini to run Stage Manager. I don’t need it to have a ProMotion display or more RAM. I don’t need it to be bigger or come with a Magic Keyboard. I need it, in fact, to be nothing more than it currently is. I was wrong in trying to frame the iPad mini as an alternative to other models. The iPad mini would lose the fight in any comparison or measurement against the 11” iPad Pro.
