“There are a substantial number of people who have access to internal stuff like this. There’s more under the tip of the iceberg.”
After the Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender leak, the top brass at Paramount worked with their legal department to make sure all clips were removed from the Internet. An internal investigation got underway to figure out what happened. Executives ruled out a vulnerable system at Paramount. A suspect in Singapore was arrested and is awaiting trial. If he is found guilty, he could potentially go to prison for up to seven years and/or be fined $50,000.
After Paramount's investigation determined that its own system was not at fault, attention turned to a screening company called Vision Media, which oversees award show promotion for several entertainment companies, including Paramount. Vision Media has started its own investigation into the matter.
Jason Deadrich, the screening company's CEO, admitted in a recording that cybercriminals have gained access to its content. A conclusion in the investigation hasn't been reached yet, and Deadrich, who is cooperating with law enforcement, still doesn't know how hackers breached the system.
Avatar: The Last Airbender is a fan-favorite TV show that aired for three seasons from 2005 to 2008. The critically acclaimed series has a perfect score of 100% on Rotten Tomatoes and has been honored at the Emmys, Peabody Awards, and Annie Awards, among others.
After the success of The Last Airbender, a spinoff show called The Legend of Korra ran for four seasons. The franchise branched out into live-action with M. Night Shyamalan's widely panned film and the current series on Netflix; Avatar: The Last Airbender season 2 is set to be released on the popular streamer on June 25.
Avatar will be going back to its animation roots in the coming years following Nickelodeon's creation of Avatar Studios, with Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender coming out first. The film is being directed by Lauren Montgomery, who already has a history of working on the original animated series.
Eric Nam, Dave Bautista, Taika Waititi, Geraldine Viswanathan, Ken Jeong, Ronny Chieng, Freida Pinto, Steven Yeun, Román Zaragoza, Jessica Matten, Dee Bradley Baker, Dionne Quan and Ke Huy Quan are all part of the cast of Avatar Aang, which was originally supposed to be released in theaters in fall 2025 before being delayed to early 2026 and then October 2026.
Paramount eventually pulled the film from its theatrical calendar and announced that Avatar Aang would be released on its streaming service, Paramount+, instead, which angered the fandom. Then the leak back in April created even more drama for Paramount.
Aside from Avatar Aang, other films are being developed, along with a new spinoff series called Avatar: Seven Havens, which has been given a two-season order, with 26 episodes in total.
Michael DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko are the creators and will executive produce with Ethan Spaulding and Sehaj Sethi. Set after Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra, Seven Havens will center on a new Avatar who sets out on a quest to save civilization.
Avatar Aang: The Last Avatar will be released on October 9, 2026, on Paramount+.
