Agatha Christie mysteriously disappeared during the height of her fame, and the upcoming movie exploring these events has cast an Oscar nominee to play the acclaimed author.

At the end of 1926, the same year that Christie published her sixth novel, The Murder of Roger Ackroyd, she vanished for nearly two weeks and had no memory of where she’d been when she finally resurfaced. The mystery thriller Eleven Missing Days will delve into this short, yet bizarre chapter of her life.

Deadline reports that Felicity Jones will portray Christie in the upcoming movie, which will be presented by Fortitude International to buyers at the Cannes Film Festival later this week. She will be joined in the upcoming movie by Black Swan’s Vincent Cassel, who will play “a retired Belgian police detective who gets drawn into the case.” He sounds similar to Hercule Poirot, the most famous character from Christie's books.

Silo’s Bertie Ellwood is directing Eleven Missing Days, and Better Luck Tomorrow’s Ernesto Foronda wrote the screenplay. The movie is based on the 1998 book Agatha Christie and the Missing Eleven Days, which was written by Christie expert Jared Cade. Nicole Elizabeth Berger and Oliver Trevena will also star, but their roles haven’t been disclosed.

Christie went missing from December 3, 1926, to December 14, bringing an already emotionally tumultuous year for the author to a strange end. Her mother passed away that April, and then in August, her first husband, Archibald Christie, asked for a divorce. On December 3, the Christies got into an argument when Archibald informed Agatha that he intended to spend the weekend with some friends, without her.

Hours later, Christie disappeared, and her car was found abandoned the next day with an expired license and clothes inside. This ignited a heavily publicized search for her, with even Sherlock Holmes author Arthur Conan Doyle getting involved. There are various theories about what happened to the author during this time, including her memory loss potentially happening as a result of a car crash or having entered a “fugue state.”

Though Christie didn’t mention the disappearance in her autobiography, she didn't shed more light on it before she died in 1976. The event has previously been explored through a fictional lens in movies like 1979’s Agatha and 2018’s Agatha and the Truth of Murder, as well as the Doctor Who episode “The Unicorn and the Wasp.”

Jones’ casting in Eleven Missing Days follows an eventful 2025 for the actor. Last year saw her starring in 100 Nights of Hero, Oh. What. Fun., and Train Dreams. Jones' other movie credits include The Theory of Everything, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, and The Brutalist, with the latter earning her an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress nomination.

Cassel won the César Award for Best Actor for his performance in the 2008 French film Mesrine. Along with Black Swan, his major English language credits include Elizabeth, Shrek, Jason Bourne, and the Westworld TV series. Before Eleven Missing Days, he’ll next be seen in The White Lotus season 4.
