Scream 7 is wielding its legacy to dominate 2026's other horror movies.

The new record-breaking installment in the slasher franchise features Neve Campbell returning as longtime final girl Sidney Prescott after sitting out 2023's Scream VI amid a pay dispute. The Scream 7 release, which kicked off on February 27, earned the biggest domestic opening weekend of the franchise by far and had a global debut that saw it outgrossing the entire run of Scream 4 in just three days.

Per The Numbers, Scream 7 has now hit a cumulative global box office total of $100.1 million, comprising $70 million at the domestic box office and an additional $33.1 million from international markets. This makes it the seventh 2026 movie to pass the $100 million milestone worldwide (behind GOAT, Boonie Bears: The Hidden Protector, Scare Out, Blades of the Guardians, Wuthering Heights, and Pegasus 3).

In addition to being only the third English-language release of the year to gross more than $100 million, 2026's Scream 7 is the only horror movie to have done so. It is the highest-grossing horror release of the year by far, having quickly surpassed titles from the year's robust genre slate, which includes Send Help ($88.9 million), 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple ($57.8 million), and Primate ($41.4 million).

Although Scream 7 is projected to drop 60% at the domestic box office during its sophomore weekend, that puts it on track with the 2023 hit Scream VI, which dropped 61%. If it maintains the same trajectory, it seems likely to earn roughly $245 million worldwide by the end of its run, which far exceeds the estimated $112.5 million break-even point suggested by its reported $45 million budget.

This would provide steep competition for any other horror releases to come in 2026. Although multiple tentpole horror movies are set to debut through the end of the year, including the upcoming Evil Dead Burn, Insidious: The Bleeding World, and Ready or Not 2, there are very few that seem like they might have a strong chance of toppling Scream 7 as the highest-grossing horror title of the year.

The only movie that seems like it could potentially do so is Zach Cregger's Resident Evil movie, which is both part of a blockbuster franchise and is his immediate follow-up to Weapons, which grossed $270 million in 2025.

However, if Scream 7 surpasses Resident Evil and 2026's other contenders, it will become the franchise's first installment to be the highest-grossing horror movie of the year in which it was released since the first two installments in 1996 and 1997. The highest-grossing horror titles in the years the other movies debuted were 2000's Hollow Man, 2011's Paranormal Activity 3, 2022's Smile, and 2023's Five Nights at Freddy's.
