Netflix is launching MED, a medical drama out of Brazil. The streamer announced a slate of new Brazilian originals today as the Rio2C film and TV confab got underway.
MED will be Netflix’s first medical drama from Brazil. Clara Moneke will star and Paranoid is the production company, the same label that produced global hit Criminal Code. The announcement comes soon after Netflix greenlit its first legal drama from Brazil, Habeas Corpus, which is being made by Café Royal and is now in production.
There is also a doc from Maria Farinha Filmes on the slate, following Brazilian sailor Tamara Klink’s solitary journey across the Arctic. Elsewhere, an unnamed melodrama series will be directed by acclaimed filmmaker Rogério Gomes (aka Papinha) and produced by A Fábrica.
Two comedies round out the five-strong announcement. There is comedy special Os Crentes and an unnamed project about an open marriage, created by Alexandre Machado, directed by José Alvarenga Jr. and produced by Manas Filmes.
Netflix recently opened a new Brazil HQ in January and has been bolstering its slate of locally originated shows. As the new office opened its doors, the streamer reported a 60% year-on-year increase in viewing of Brazilian titles during the second half of last year.
As well as the five shows unveiled this week, other Netflix Brazil upcoming originals include Radioactive Emergency, soccer drama Brasil 70 and, per our earlier scoop, an adaptation of author Paulo Coelho’s The Pilgrimage.
Rio2C is the biggest industry gathering in LatAm and Netflix is front and center this time, taking part in multiple sessions this time.
“Rio2C is an important space for dialogue with the industry and also a great opportunity to showcase the strength and diversity of the stories we’re developing in Brazil,” says Elisabetta Zenatti, Vice President of Content at Netflix Brazil. “These new projects reflect just that: different genres, perspectives, and creators, all with great potential to connect with audiences both in Brazil and internationally.”
