Netflix's New Stephen King-esque Thriller Series Below Revealed In First Trailer

The first trailer for Netflix's Stephen King-esque show Below has arrived.

Below is a six-episode limited thriller series in which Josh Hartnett plays fisherman Calvin Penney. Similar to many stories written by King, it is set in a small town, where the protagonist is haunted by a traumatic incident, in this case the death of Calvin's father, and a mysterious threat begins terrorizing the town. To save everyone before it is too late, Calvin works with a visiting marine researcher, Fonda Howander (Mackenzie Davis), in order to understand and confront the sea creature causing all the trouble, along with revealing the secrets of the island.

Netflix has now released the first trailer for Below, which begins calmly as Calvin narrates about spending his life on the water and is shown enjoying life in the picturesque small town. The tension quickly escalates as Fonda notices something strange in the water surrounding the island. While many of the locals scoff at this, Calvin knows she is right, and the footage ends with him shouting at everyone to stay away from the water. Check out the trailer below:

Below's cast of characters also includes Stranger Things star Charlie Heaton as Calvin's son, Wade Penney, along with Willow Kean as Mary Penney, Ruby Stokes as Mary Penney, Rohan Campbell as Jay Penney, and Kaleb Horn as Noah. Jesse McKeown, who previously worked on The Umbrella Academy and The Sinner, is the show's creator and showrunner, in addition to serving as an executive producer alongside Hartnett, Jessica Rhoades, Chris Hatcher, Jamie Childs, Louise Sutton, and Sharon Hall.

The series will debut at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 10 before coming to Netflix on October 8. The episodes were filmed on location in St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada.

As teased in the trailer, the show combines myth, suspense, and humor, along with themes of family, community, and change. This is not only similar to King's works, but to Apple TV's Widow's Bay, which has been one of the year's biggest breakout hits. While Widow's Bay fully leaned into both horror and comedy, Below seems as though it will be grounded more so in horror. Regardless, it has the opportunity to benefit from the popularity of the Apple TV series, especially as the wait for its second season continues.

For Hartnett, Below reunites him with Netflix after playing David Ross in Black Mirror season 6, episode 3, "Beyond the Sea". It is a reunion for Heaton as well after playing Jonathan Byers in five seasons of Stranger Things, the last of which was released in 2025, and with the character being the breakout role in his career. Davis also has history with the streamer after voicing Martha Kelverson in Love, Death + Robots season 3, episode 3, "The Very Pulse of the Machine."

Below debuts at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 10 and on Netflix on October 8.
