Netflix struck gold in 2022 with the premiere of The Night Agent. The gritty action thriller became an immediate streaming sensation, becoming one of the most-watched Netflix Original series with 98.2 million views in Season 1. Netflix announced a renewal quickly, and The Night Agent Season 2 followed in its predecessor's footsteps, leading to another season. However, things are changing with the season that premiered last month. The show has reportedly lost 40% of its first-week viewership compared to Season 2. The new season recorded 8.3 million views, compared to 13.9 million from Season 2 and 20.6 million from Season 1.

This bleed in viewership is evident in the platform's streaming chart, where The Night Agent has struggled to hold the top spot despite releasing a ten-episode season at once. Official data from Netflix shows that in the second weekend, The Night Agent has only accumulated 9.9 million views and has lost the lead to Bridgerton, which is miles ahead with 28 million views in its fifth week in the top ten. In its first fortnight on the platform, The Night Agent Season 3 is not even close to reaching the debut numbers for Season 1. A drop in viewership is expected for most shows, but a drop this sharp signals a huge problem for the series.

'The Night Agent' Might Be In Trouble

The fact that The Night Agent is aging does not favor it, as shows tend to get more expensive the longer they run, while the numbers continue to dwindle. The good news is that the streaming service has already officially renewed the show for Season 4, with confirmation of an already opened writers' room, so the season will be on our screens quite soon. Speaking with Collider's Christina Radish, showrunner Shawn Ryan teased Season 4's progress prior to today's renewal news, saying,

"Season 4 has not officially been picked up yet, but Netflix and Sony have allowed us to start a writers' room, . . . . We're breaking episode five right now. So, the answer is that there is a plan, and hopefully, in the near future, we'll get the official green light to make it. But for the moment, we’re just focusing on the scripts and the creative side. I want to keep the focus on Season 3 because that's what's coming out, and a lot still could change about Season 4. But to your point about Season 3, there is a plan to address the things that are left untied up at the end of Season 3."
