Netflix's 12-Episode Historical Fantasy Series Deserves Its 95% Score On Rotten Tomatoes

However, discerning fantasy fans who are seeking out a new show should first head to Netflix, where one superb Korean series, Bon Appétit, Your Majesty, is currently going under the radar despite its well-earned critical success.

Based on the web novel Surviving as Yeonsangun’s Chef by author Park Guk-jae, Bon Appétit, Your Majesty is a fantasy time travel series that blends the star-crossed lovers of Outlander with the high-intensity restaurant antics of The Bear. The series follows Lim Yoona’s Yeon Ji-yeong, a resourceful, successful chef at the top of her game. After winning a highly lauded French cooking award, Yeon Ji-yeong inexplicably travels back in time to Korea’s Joseon dynasty era thanks to a magical solar eclipse.

Instead of getting off her flight to Seoul and returning home, Yeon Ji-yeong finds herself transported to the royal court of Lee Chae-min’s King Lee Heon. A young king who doesn’t trust his scheming court officials after the death of his beloved mother, King Lee Heon is both a tyrant and a gourmand. Through the magic of her modern cooking techniques, Yeon Ji-yeong soon wins him over and becomes the Chief Royal Cook.

While Netflix’s Dark was one of the best time travel shows ever made, Bon Appétit, Your Majesty could not be further from the grim sci-fi classic in terms of tone. However, with its playful blend of court politics, historical drama, romantic comedy, and light-hearted adventure, Bon Appétit, Your Majesty more than earns its 95% rating from reviewers on Rotten Tomatoes.

Bon Appétit, Your Majesty Is Getting A Spinoff Instead Of Season 2

While fans might have hoped that the critical success of Bon Appétit, Your Majesty season 1 would have been enough to secure the series a second season renewal, this could have been a double-edged sword. After all, season 1’s ending was already satisfying, and a second outing could have risked ruining the central duo’s story with an unnecessary addendum. Thus, it is great news that Bon Appétit, Your Majesty’s follow-up will instead be a spinoff starring Cha Eun Woo.

The WONDERfools star will play the spinoff’s lead role, with Bon Appétit, Your Majesty director Jang Tae-Yoo returning for the new show. Titled Seorabeol Knife, the show will take place in the world of the original series, albeit in a much older period of Korea’s history, judging by its title. Since Seorabeol was the ancient name for Korea’s old capital, Bon Appétit, Your Majesty looks set to jump even further into history than its franchise predecessor.
