After a brief detour into the festival circuit with the passion project The Last Photograph, director Zack Snyder is gearing up to return to franchise filmmaking with a remake of Escape from New York. Snyder has spent the majority of his career working with pre-established properties, at least when he isn’t devising his own. In recent years, he has worked on a string of big-budget projects with Netflix, with mixed results. Both the franchises he was meant to oversee — Army of the Dead and Rebel Moon — were abandoned due to regime changes and unremarkable performance. The filmmaker had a similar experience during his stint at Warner Bros. Interestingly, the biggest box-office underperformer from his WB era is currently streaming on Netflix, but only for a little while longer.
