Netflix Officially Announces the Return of Its Superior 'Rick and Morty' Replacement

Rick and Morty is undeniably one of the best animated sci-fi shows of all time, a well-earned honor, given its consistent critical acclaim over nine seasons. Premiering on December 2, 2013, the series follows the misadventures of the cynical Rick Sanchez and his good-hearted but fidgety grandson, Morty Smith. Rick is a mad scientist who, with Morty, explores different realities and dimensions, often traveling to other planets through portals and in Rick's flying saucer.

Although Rick and Morty is regarded as one of the best, its quality varies across seasons, with the earlier ones often seen as the show's peak and compared to other animated sitcoms. One such show is Solar Opposites, co-created by a Rick and Morty alum, which some consider a better sci-fi alternative for viewers who enjoy a sillier, faster-paced, more chaotic family dynamic.

'Solar Opposites' Season 6 Marked the End of an Era

Solar Opposites Season 6 brought back the main cast, including Dan Stevens, Thomas Middleditch, Mary Mack, and Sean Giambrone. Guest stars included Tiffany Haddish, Kieran Culkin, Christina Hendricks, Ken Marino, Alfred Molina, and Beck Bennett. Announced as the series' final season in March 2025, it received mixed reviews and has the lowest critical rating among all seasons on Rotten Tomatoes.

Even with the divisive finale, fans are still hoping for a seventh season. Co-creator Mike McMahan discussed this during a Collider interview at SDCC 2025, saying there are "a lot more stories to tell." While acknowledging that he will miss Solar Opposites, McMahan also expressed his desire to do more with the show, noting that in animation, nothing is ever truly finished. "I've just seen it happen so many times that things come back in different forms in different places. I would greatly like to do more," he stated.
