After spending a few years in director jail, David Ayer has clawed his way back into the big leagues. Ayer's next project is Heart of the Beast, a survival thriller produced by Damien Chazelle and starring Brad Pitt. Ayer and Pitt worked together for the first time over a decade ago, on a World War II action-thriller that has emerged as a bona fide fan-favorite. The movie is currently available to stream on Netflix, although not all subscribers will be able to access it. According to What's On Netflix, it's one of the 140 titles that the streamer has restricted this month from subscribers to its ad-supported tier. This is done mainly for rights reasons, as Netflix cannot monetize certain titles with ads.

Even though Netflix has a first-run deal with Sony, none of the studio's titles are available on the ad-supported tier. This includes Ayer and Pitt's World War II movie, Fury. It was released theatrically in 2014, emerging as a solid box-office hit. Fury grossed more than $210 million worldwide against a reported budget of $80 million. It also featured Jon Bernthal, Michael Peña, Shia LaBeouf, and Logan Lerman as the audience surrogate character. The central cast played members of a tank unit sent across enemy lines in Germany during the final days of the war. The film's demanding production created a solid bond between the cast members; Ayer and Pitt are reuniting, and the filmmaker has since collaborated again with LaBeouf. Bernthal and LaBeouf also looked back on the experience on the former's podcast.

As an Anti-War Drama, 'Fury' Remains as Topical as Ever

Fury received mostly positive reviews upon release, and now holds a "Certified Fresh" 75% critics' score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes. The website's consensus reads, "Overall, Fury is a well-acted, suitably raw depiction of the horrors of war that offers visceral battle scenes but doesn't quite live up to its larger ambitions." The movie has an even higher audience score of 84%, which explains why it has been able to stand the test of time. Also starring Jason Isaacs and Scott Eastwood, the movie was praised for its grim depiction of war, and for highlighting the human cost of large-scale conflict. These themes remain as topical as ever. Stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
