Greg Peters has jetted into Brazil for the opening of the streamer’s new office in São Paulo, which the Netflix co-CEO said marked the next step for the company in the country. Peters also revealed Netflix will stream Oscar-nominated film The Secret Agent in Brazil.
Netflix set up shop in Brazil 15 years ago and Peters and local officials were in position for the grand opening of its new, and larger, local HQ. Netflix Brazil’s new space is located in the Pinheiros district of the city and becomes its only office in Latin America occupied exclusively by the company. The streamer has about 300 employees in Brazil — a total that factors in a hefty 20% increase in headcount through 2025.
Peters has his hands full with the streamer’s play for Warner Bros. Discovery, a company that also has extensive operations in Brazil and throughout Latin America. Turning his attention to Netflix’s Brazilian activities, Peters said: “The opening of our new São Paulo office is a natural next step in the journey our local team has built over the past 15 years alongside Brazil’s creative community. We are extremely proud to work hand-in-hand with local creators and to witness firsthand how Brazil continues to tell stories that resonate far beyond its borders.”
Netflix dished some stats to back up the latter point about international viewing of its Brazilian fare. It reported a 60% year-on-year increase in viewing of Brazilian titles during the second half of last year.
Peters also revealed Netflix had invested in, and taken local rights to The Secret Agent, the Brazilian film that received four Oscar nominations and has won multiple awards this season. Netflix partnered with the producers to help finance the film and has licensed it for Brazilian audiences stream on Netflix in the future.
“We support Brazilian films in multiple ways because we want to be the best partners and stay flexible so local producers can decide the best way to bring their projects to life,” Peters said. “That’s why we were so excited to partner with The Secret Agent‘s producers to help fund the film and pre-license it for Netflix in Brazil.”
The streamer has placed some big bets in LatAm, as we have extensively reported, and Brazil is very much part of that story. Its first Brazilian original was 3%, which premiered back in 2016. Since then its lineup has included the film Caramelo and series Criminal Code and Rulers of Fortune. Upcoming originals include Radioactive Emergency, soccer drama Brasil 70 and, per our earlier scoop, an adaptation of author Paulo Coelho’s The Pilgrimage.
