Netflix Births Maternity Ward Docuseries ‘Born in the USA’ From Wheelhouse

EXCLUSIVE: Netflix is exploring the world of maternity wards in its latest docuseries.

The streamer has greenlit Born in the USA (w/t) from Million Second Quiz producer Wheelhouse.

The series has been birthed over the last few years as producers secured access to a busy maternity ward.

Born In The USA “unlocks a high-stakes hidden world: birth”, per the streamer. “On call 24/7, doctors and nurses guide every kind of family through one of the most important and unpredictable days of their lives. As each unique labor sets the clock ticking, split-second decisions, medical drama and raw emotions unfold in real time,” reads the logline.

The series is exec produced by Kate Collier, Will Nothacker and Courtney White.

It exists in a similar world to long-running British series One Born Every Minute, which ran for eleven seasons on Channel 4 before ending in 2018. The fixed-rig series, which was adapted in the U.S. for Lifetime in 2011, is returning for a reboot in the UK later this year. The difference, however, is that One Born Every Minute was filmed across a variety of hospitals in Southampton, Leeds, Liverpool and Manchester.

Wheelhouse is behind a number of series for Netflix including Calabasas Confidential, America’s Sweethearts: The Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders, which was just renewed for a fourth season, King of Collectibles: The Goldin Touch and Buying Beverly Hills.

It marks Netflix’s latest unscripted order; the streamer recently ordered The Leftovers from 495 Productions, SallyAnn Salsano’s company that was behind Jersey Shore, and Arizona Hot, an ensemble reality series from Brightspot Content.
