Netflix's latest crime thriller is far from a limited series.
Nemesis, co-created by Power's Courtney Kemp and Tani Marole, focuses on a cat-and-mouse game in Los Angeles between a hotheaded LAPD detective, Isaiah Stiles, played by actor Matthew Law, and a calculating master thief, Coltrane Wilder, played by Y'lan Noel. Exploring themes of obsession, family dynamics, and the blurred lines between right and wrong, the eight-episode crime drama keeps the stakes raised with action scenes that get your heart pumping, making it the perfect high-intensity binge-watch for lovers of the genre.
Leaving off on a serious cliffhanger that concludes without any real resolution between Wilder and Stiles, Nemesis' finale sets the stage for seasons to come, and that's exactly the plan Kemp and Marole have in mind. The pair spoke to ScreenRant's Grant Hermanns about the show and their plan to expand the Nemesis universe beyond the limited series run it was originally intended for.
Tani Marole: It's not a miniseries. In all fairness, it was ideated as limited. Courtney doesn't do limited. She does universes. I'm like, "No, limited. End it. Let's go. Let's just end it right here." She's like, "Expansive, big bang, big bang." I'm like, "No, little, small little thing."
Lucky for Kemp, Netflix had the same idea, and rather than keeping the series limited, wanted the pair to construct an "ongoing arc" for Nemesis, leaving room for a several-season rollout, which Marole ultimately got on board with.
Tani Marole: And then luckily for us, our creatives and our wonderful executives at Netflix didn't want it to be limited either. So it's constructed with an ongoing arc.
There's no real winner or loser by the time season 1 comes to a close, and that was largely done by design as the show looks to take the story further. Describing the rivalry between Wilder and Stiles as ongoing, Marole likened it to the years-long back-and-forth seen between characters like King Kong and Godzilla, and real-life competitors, boxers Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather.
Tani Marole: We have an idea of who would win. But in Courtney Kemp universes and worlds — I believe, I'm not speaking for you — there's no true winner or loser, so to speak. It's just grays of winning and grays of losing, but make no mistake, this is Mike Tyson versus whoever. This is King Kong versus Godzilla, this is Pacquiao and Mayweather, Floyd, the whole thing. We've designed it to be that. It goes all the way to the last frame. When I tell you, Grant, to the last frame, I rarely say to the last frame, not like some, "Oh, grand picture." No, to the last frame it goes. So we're excited. Hopefully, in success, we get to roll it out.
While Kemp stayed mum on the pair's plan moving forward, she noted that there very much is a path towards expansion for the Netflix series, one that goes far beyond just eight episodes.
Courtney Kemp: We definitely have a going forward plan. And yes, I am the person who thinks, "This is the beginning, but how do we make a universe out of it?" Of course, we always think about that. But I would say also that because the story is really about when you focus on someone else, and beating someone else, how you actually end up damaging yourself, there are so many different iterations of how that can go and how that can slip and slide. So, we definitely want to explore that for further than just eight episodes.
