Mulder And Scully's Real X-Files Return Is Officially 4 Months Away

Mulder and Scully are, arguably, the most iconic TV duo of all time. Across 9 seasons of the original X-Files series, fans got to see the FBI agents grow to trust and care deeply for each other despite their philosophical differences, creating an impeccable dynamic that has aged perfectly. Unfortunately, despite strong character writing and intense chemistry between Mulder and Scully actors David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson, the most recent attempt to bring the characters back failed to capture the magic.

That is why fans have every reason to be excited for the upcoming X-Files comic series from Dynamite. Releasing in December, Dynamite's X-Files series is being helmed by writer Joe Harris and artist Riley Brown. Details are scarce at the moment, but released character designs have teased Mulder and Scully's return to the spotlight. While it's not clear exactly when in the X-Files timeline the new comic series will take place, the character designs indicate a potential return to the franchise's early golden years.

Dynamite's X-Files Reboot Can Finally Clean Up The Mess That Was Seasons 10 And 11

Released in 2016 and 2018, respectively, seasons 10 and 11 of The X-Files were met with controversy from both fans and cast alike. Though the consensus was that the standalone, monster-of-the-week stories were either good or great apart from a few misses, reception to the important lore episodes was far more negative. Most notably, Gillian Anderson was so mad about The X-Files' season 11 finale that she threatened to skip returning for a hypothetical season 12 if one was ever made.

Based on the fact that Mulder appears to be wearing an FBI badge, it appears unlikely that Dynamite's X-Files comic will take place anytime after the original series finale, season 9's 2-part The Truth. This, unfortunately, means that the new series probably won't retcon many of the more controversial twists and turns made by The X-Files' 2016 and 2018 revival seasons.

Despite this, however, the new X-Files comic can at least work to undo some of the reputational damage both to the franchise at large and to Mulder and Scully's characterization. Regardless of their merit, seasons 10 and 11 clearly left the franchise on a sour note for many. So, the promise of more good Mulder and Scully stories has the potential to remind fans what made the series and characters so special in the first place.

Luckily for anyone even slightly worried about how Dynamite will handle Mulder and Scully, the two storied FBI Agents are in good hands.

Dynamite's X-Files series is being helmed by writer Joe Harris. Harris is a franchise veteran who previously wrote The X-Files' original seasons 10 and 11 as comics over at IDW. While these comics have a bit more of a mixed reception among die-hard fans, it's difficult to argue that they aren't a big step up from the actual seasons 10 and 11 in many ways.

One of the best parts of the Harris' IDW run on X-Files is how it undid some of the original series' more controversial choices. Notably, several dead supporting characters like the Lone Gunmen are given a second chance at life, while some of the original series' weird plot turns are also given a better justification.

Given this, there is reason to hope that Dynamite's X-Files comic will be a return to form for Mulder and Scully.

The world is eagerly awaiting Ryan Coogler's upcoming X-Files reboot. With a potential for Mulder and Scully's return, there is hope that their characters will finally get a proper conclusion. Until that highly anticipated reboot releases, however, fans can only hope that Dynamite's The X-Files series is a proper return to form for the world's most iconic TV duo.
