Global film distributor, streamer and production company Mubi has snagged Latin American streaming rights to Chilean sausage docu-comedy “Denominación de Origen,” a 2025 box office phenomenon in Chile, which it plans to stream in the region later this year.

The sophomore feature of director Tomás Alzamora (“Little White Lie”) lured more than 100,000 admissions in Chilean cinemas, according to Alzamora and his producing partner Pablo Calisto.

It’s set in the tiny town of San Carlos (population: 50,000+), which is up in arms over what they perceive as a terrible wrong: the neighboring town of Chillán has snatched the award for the “Best Longaniza in Chile” from them. Outraged by the blatant injustice, a group of San Carlos locals launch a grassroots movement seeking official designation of origin status for their sausages — determined to reclaim their town’s pride and dignity.

The docu-fiction hybrid was shot entirely in southern Chile and features a cast of non-pros, among them Luisa Marabolí, Exequías Inostroza, Roberto Betancourt and Alexis Marín.

“That Mubi is bringing ‘Denominación de Origen’ to its platform is very meaningful for us. Not only because it allows the film to keep living beyond its run in theaters and festivals, but also because it brings it to new audiences across Latin America through a platform with a very compelling cinematic perspective,” Alzamora told Variety.

“I also feel there’s something very beautiful about a film that is so local — so deeply tied to rural characters and to a very specific Chilean identity — being able to connect with audiences in different countries. At the end of the day, throughout Latin America we share many contradictions, senses of humor and ways of getting by.”

In 2024, “Denominación de Origen” won both the best feature Audience Award and Special Jury Prize in the feature film category at the 31st Valdivia International Film Festival, a strong indication of its box office success the following year.

Alzamora also took home the award for best director at the 26th Buenos Aires International Festival of Independent Cinema (BAFICI).

Written by Alzamora and Javier Salinas, with cinematography by Sergio Armstrong (“The Club,” “Neruda”), original music by Martín Schlotfeldt and production design by Nicolás Oyarce, the film was produced by Alzamora and Calisto under their production banner Equeco, founded in 2016.

The docu-comedy joins a number of recent pickups by Mubi that includes Fernando Eimbcke’s “Flies” (“Moscas”), which it plans to release theatrically as well, Oscar-nominated “Sirāt” by Oliver Laxe and winner of the 2026 Best International Feature Film Academy Award, “Sentimental Value” by Joachim Trier.

Other titles in Mubi’s rich catalog include “Die, My Love” by Lynne Ramsay, “Grace: The Beauty of Doubt” by Paolo Sorrentino, “My Father’s Shadow” by Akinola Davies Jr., “Sound of Falling” by Mascha Schilinski, “No Other Choice” by Park Chan-Wook and “It Was Just an Accident” by Jafar Panahi.
