Now, Deadline reports that McCallany will be the lead in the upcoming movie Hyde, once again taking up the mantle of a serial killer investigator after his Mindhunter role. Described as a "noir-tinged thriller," the actor will be playing Detective Grimes, who is hunting down a serial killer in a decadent city. McCallany joins previously announced actors Bruce Greenwood, Nathalie Emmanuel, and David Harewood as filming begins in Bucharest, Romania. Directors and brothers Graham and Parker Phillips released a statement praising the actors involved in the crime thriller project:
We’re thrilled to be working with such intelligent and collaborative actors. Everyone arrived with bold ideas, strong instincts, and a real willingness to explore and take risks, all against the backdrop of Bucharest, whose architecture and atmosphere feel tailor-made for this twisted tale.
The Phillips brothers also wrote the script, and are producing the film via Phillips Pictures. The serial killer movie is also being produced by Jason Tamasco and Zak Kristofek of Traction, while it's being executive produced by Cassian Elwes, Keith Danko, and Bailey Rotsky. Tamasco and Kristofek also released a statement about McCallany joining the cast of the film, explaining their excitement for him to be leading the film:
It’s a privilege to have Holt join and lead this cast alongside Nathalie, Bruce, and David. We could not be more excited about the team that has come together and the film we’re creating here in Romania. We cannot wait for audiences to experience Hyde.
McCallany's role will involve closeness to his other cast members. Emmanuel will be co-starring as Detective Doran, who is assigned to work under Grimes during his serial killer investigation. Greenwood's character, Henry Monroe, is a therapist Grimes is required to see, aiding in unraveling his past and why he's adamant about finding Hyde's central killer. Finally, Harewood brings Lieutenant Robert Malloy to life, who's trying to keep the police department alive despite lack of funding, while also keeping Grimes in check.
Hyde marks yet another major role for McCallany after the end of Mindhunter. The actor most recently portrayed Secretary of Defense Bernstein in Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning, as well as Neil Bishop in The Lincoln Lawyer season 3. Some of his other major upcoming roles include Atlas in Percy Jackson and the Olympians season 3, and a role in the Brad Pitt-led The Adventures of Cliff Booth. But Hyde marks an important production given his investigative role, which echoes his character from the Netflix serial killer series.
As filming for the movie begins, more information about Hyde will likely arrive later down the line. This includes more story elements involving the city it takes place in, as well as why the serial killer Grimes is hunting holds such crucial importance. While the movie will likely evoke Mindhunter vibes for audiences familiar with the Netflix show, it's clearly traversing its own path that, while likely getting comparisons thanks to McCallany's familiar role, will be a story all its own.
