The countdown has officially begun for the return of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers’ Tommy Oliver, who is making a monumental comeback as the Green Ranger claims his own solo series. This is a can’t-miss expansion of Tommy’s lore, as the new series doesn’t simply reboot the character but instead pushes his story forward, exploring the Green Ranger in an all-new way.
On August 5, 2026, Tommy Oliver returns in BOOM! Studios’ Power Rangers: Green #1. The debut issue kicks off a five-part limited series that explores a re-envisioned future for the Green Ranger, as Tommy comes out of retirement when the fate of the world is at stake.
Spearheaded by the creative team of Power Rangers veteran writer Paul Allor (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, G.I. Joe) and artist Gustavo Vargas (ALTIPLANO, Olympos: Nullhunter), the series presents a future in which Tommy is the last Power Ranger on Earth. Having long since retired, he now lives a quiet life with his found family of misfits. However, that peaceful existence is interrupted when “an unexpected visitor from his past arrives on his doorstep and challenges him to take up the hero’s mantle once more.”
Fans will be able to purchase the 32-page Power Rangers: Green #1 from local comic shops and digitally for $4.99.
Thanks to the solicitation for Power Rangers: Green #2, which releases on September 16, 2026, fans know that Tommy will answer the unexpected visitor's call for help, leading him and his ragtag crew into battle against a deadly new enemy. The official synopsis further teases that this new villain is called the Red Censor. As a result, fans can expect Power Rangers: Green to make plenty of new additions to the Green Ranger's legacy as it continues to expand Tommy Oliver's lore.
Power Rangers: Green Is Tommy Oliver's Most Ambitious Story Yet

If Power Rangers: Green gives the impression of being a love letter to the legacy of Tommy Oliver, you aren't alone in thinking that. The series stands out as the first ongoing Power Rangers comic built entirely around Tommy Oliver as its lead. Rather than simply retelling the character's story, however, it pushes his journey into a completely different stage of life.
It is this post-retirement, return-to-action premise that will truly help set the series apart from the franchise's expansive and impressive history, because, as Power Rangers fans know, the vast majority of stories take place while the heroes are in their prime. With Tommy confirmed as the last Ranger on Earth and the cover art depicting a visibly middle-aged Tommy, it is clear that the character is well past what most would consider his prime.
As a result, revisiting one of the franchise's most iconic characters while exploring him at an entirely new stage of life makes Power Rangers: Green one of the most ambitious character-focused stories the franchise has produced in years. It may even open the door to more ambitious storytelling in the same vein.
What further solidifies the impression that this series is both offering something entirely new while still paying respect to the character's history is its explicit acknowledgment of the Green Ranger's iconic origins in Western media. This acknowledgment appears on one of the variant covers by Juni Ba, which pays tribute to the original Green Ranger, Jason David Frank. It is this combination of honoring the past while boldly moving the character forward that could make Power Rangers: Green something truly special.

Power Rangers is a long-running multimedia franchise that debuted in 1993 with the TV series Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. Created by Haim Saban and adapted from the Japanese Super Sentai series, Power Rangers became a cultural phenomenon by combining action-packed footage from Super Sentai with new scenes featuring American actors. The franchise follows teams of young heroes who transform into Power Rangers to battle various villains, using martial arts, special powers, and giant mechas called Zords. Over the decades, the franchise has expanded into multiple TV series, films, comics, video games, and merchandise, becoming one of the most successful children's franchises in the world.
