As reported by Deadline, Steven Spielberg has been tapped to oversee the creative direction of the next live-action Transformers movie alongside producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura. Furthermore, Michael Bay is also in early talks to return as director after leaving the franchise following 2017's Transformers: The Last Knight. The movie is based on a script by Jason Fuchs and will be set in modern day.
The upcoming movie will be the eighth live-action installment in a franchise that began with the 2007 film. Bay directed the first five Transformers movies before stepping away after The Last Knight, with Travis Knight taking over for 2018's Bumblebee and Steven Caple Jr. directing 2023's Transformers: Rise of the Beasts. Spielberg, meanwhile, continued serving as an executive producer after taking a less hands-on role.
Paramount Pictures co-chairs Josh Greenstein and Dana Goldberg reportedly made getting Spielberg more involved a priority following the Skydance merger, with their efforts to bring him back into a hands-on role continuing over the following year. Spielberg ultimately agreed to take on the expanded creative role after reading Fuchs' latest script. Bay could make the reunion even more significant. The director also read the script before meeting with Spielberg and entering early talks to return behind the camera. If a deal is finalized, it would mark his first time directing a Transformers movie in nearly a decade.
His potential comeback also comes at an interesting point for the franchise. Neither of the two live-action movies released after his departure matched the worldwide box office totals of the franchise's billion-dollar installments. Bumblebee earned approximately $468 million worldwide, while Rise of the Beasts finished with approximately $442 million. Putting two of the figures who helped establish Transformers as a major theatrical franchise back at the center of its future therefore signals that Paramount is serious about giving the Autobots another major big-screen push.
There is also more freedom for the next movie to establish its own direction than Rise of the Beasts' ending initially suggested. The 2023 movie famously ended by introducing G.I. Joe and seemingly setting up a crossover between the two Hasbro franchises.
However, those plans have since shifted, with Paramount's upcoming G.I. Joe movie being developed separately from Transformers.
That leaves plenty of questions surrounding what Spielberg, Bay, and Fuchs have planned. The modern-day setting establishes at least one detail about the story, but it remains unclear whether characters from Bumblebee or Rise of the Beasts will return or whether the movie will take the franchise in an entirely different direction.
For longtime fans, having Spielberg take a more active creative role is already noteworthy. Pairing him with Bay again would make the next movie an even bigger reunion, especially nearly 20 years after their collaboration helped launch the live-action franchise.
With plot and casting details still under wraps, it remains to be seen how closely the next Transformers movie will resemble the franchise Spielberg and Bay helped establish nearly two decades ago.
