Director Michael Bay has never taken this long between movies. His most recent film was the criminally underrated action-thriller Ambulance, which was released in 2022. Not only has Bay not directed another narrative feature since then, but his future plans remain unclear. There have been reports about him returning to the Transformers franchise, which he launched in 2007 and attempted to reboot in 2014. Ambulance wasn't the first time that Bay attempted to make a non-franchise action movie, nor was it the first time that such an experiment didn't pan out. Now, one of Bay's most underrated movies has been added to the Starz library for a new generation to discover, or for fans of Reacher and Jack Ryan to revisit.

In 2013, having directed three blockbuster Transformers films, he released Pain & Gain, which grossed roughly $85 million worldwide despite featuring Mark Wahlberg and Dwayne Johnson. In 2016, after directing Transformers: Age of Extinction, Bay released another action film aimed at grown-ups. This film had an even more difficult run at the box office, grossing around $70 million worldwide against a reported budget of $50 million. The movie was based on a real military operation that had made headlines only a few years prior, and marked the action debut of star John Krasinski.

Michael Bay Reunited With John Krasinski on a Hit Streaming Show

We're talking, of course, about 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi. The film also featured James Badge Dale, Pablo Schreiber, and David Denman. It received mixed reviews, and is now sitting at a 51% score on Rotten Tomatoes. The aggregator website's consensus reads, "13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi is a comparatively mature and restrained effort from Michael Bay, albeit one that can't quite boast the impact its fact-based story deserves." The movie will join the Starz library this November. Following its release, Bay and Krasinski teamed up on Prime Video's Jack Ryan series, which concluded its run with a feature film this year. Stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
