Pokémon Pokopia has become the highest rated Pokémon game ever on Metacritic.

Yes, you read that right. Metacritic's list of The Pokémon Company's titles by Metascore confirms that Pokémon's Animal Crossing-like Pokopia is indeed top of the heap, edging out the previous record holder by one single point.

Pokémon Y, which was Metacritic's highest rated Pokémon game until Pokopia came along, has a Metascore of 88. Pokopia, however, has a Metascore of 89. Meanwhile Pokémon Sun, Pokémon Moon, Pokémon X, Pokémon White Version, Pokémon Black Version, Pokémon SoulSilver Version and Pokémon HeartGold Version all sit with a Metascore of 87.

We here at Eurogamer are among the many who are already very taken with Pokémon Pokopia, and our Lottie recently awarded it four out of five stars. "Pokopia succeeds in capturing the spirit of Pokémon's past without sacrificing its uniqueness, as one of the best spin-offs the franchise has ever seen," she wrote in Eurogamer's Pokémon Pokopia review.

Thankfully for any fellow Pokémon fans out there, there isn't too much longer until you can see what all the fuss is about, as Pokopia releases on Switch 2 later this week, on 5th March.

Last week, Pokémon celebrated its 30th anniversary. To mark the occasion, we were treated to a Pokémon-packed livestream, which included announcements such as a Game Boy-like device for Pokémon music, GameCube's Gale of the Darkness is coming to Switch 2 and quite a bit more. You can check out our full birthday round up in Matt's aptly named feature: Here's everything announced in today's 30th anniversary Pokémon Presents showcase.
