Met Gala 2026 Dress Code Revealed
The Met Gala 2026 is getting crafty with its theme.
After all, Vogue’s annual fundraising gala, hosted by Anna Wintour, has announced that the dress code for this year’s “Costume Art” party will be “Fashion Is Art.”
“What connects every curatorial department and what connects every single gallery in the museum is fashion, or the dressed body,” Andrew Bolton, the curator in charge of the Costume Institute—the beneficiary of the annual gala—said in a statement about the theme, per Vogue. “It’s the common thread throughout the whole museum, which is really what the initial idea for the exhibition was.”
This year’s dress code encourages Met Gala attendees to consider how a designer uses their body as a “blank canvas.”
“Fashion Is Art,” as a dress code comes just two months after the party’s co-chairs—or annual cohosts—were announced. This year, Beyoncé will make her return to the Costume Institute benefit after 10 years, acting as a cochair alongside Nicole Kidman and Venus Williams.
Meanwhile, the event’s host committee will also be rounded out with a slew of fashionable celebrities like Zoë Kravitz, Sabrina Carpenter, Doja Cat, Teyana Taylor, Misty Copeland, Lena Dunham and more.
Although longtime host Anna will still act at the helm of the annual fundraiser, her Vogue successor Chloe Malle will also officially step onto the Met steps with a hosting duty, as she will also act as an official member of the 2026 Met Gala Host Committee.
Despite the strict parameters for the highly anticipated first Monday in May, Anna has previously emphasized she has very little idea of attendees’ actual outfits until they hit the steps at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Her lingerie-inspired gown was controversial among those who felt she should have worn something more conservative (which she almost did, concerned she might embarrass her teenage son, Prince William), but the navy satin slip dress—designed by John Galliano for Dior— was an instantly iconic look.
Through 2024, the Princess of Wales and Princess Beatrice are the only members of Britain's royal family who have attended the Met Gala, though it's hard to imagine Prince Harry and Meghan Markle not making their own grand entrance one of these days.

Elevator Showdown
The 2014 Met Gala went down in infamy thanks to a certain elevator ride starring Beyoncé, Jay-Z and Solange Knowles. Leaked surveillance footage showed the rapper being physically accosted by Bey's little sister in the lift at NYC's Standard Hotel while his wife made no move to intervene, prompting the notoriously private trio to release a rare public statement reassuring anyone who was interested (a.k.a., everybody) that they remained a "united family."
