Megalopolis Digital Release Date Revealed

Megalopolis' digital release has now been revealed following its disastrous theatrical run. Directed by Francis Ford Coppola, the science-fiction film hit theaters in September, following Adam Driver's Cesar Catilina, an architect, as he attempts to rebuild New York City into a utopia following a devastating event. Megalopolis reviews were mixed from critics and the film, which also stars Shia LaBeouf, Nathalie Emmanuel, Giancarlo Esposito, and Aubrey Plaza, was a box office bomb.

Lionsgate now reveals that Megalopolis will launch on premium video on demand starting Tuesday, November 12. The film will be available to rent or purchase on most major VOD platforms, including Apple TV, Prime Video, Fandango at Home, and Google Play, among others.

What Megalopolis' VOD Release Means For Its Overall Reception

Can Francis Ford Coppola's Epic Sci-Fi Be Saved?

Sometimes, a movie that underperforms in theaters can change its fate by finding its audience on home viewing platforms. That, however, seems unlikely to happen with Megalopolis. Coppola's film grossed only $13.7 million worldwide on a budget of $120 million, money that Coppola himself supplied. Using the traditional Hollywood formula, Megalopolis could have been looking at a break-even point of at least $240 million, a figure it's clearly very far short of.

In addition to a 46% critics' score on Rotten Tomatoes, Megalopolis' audience score is a dismal 35%. This suggests that there wasn't really any positive word-of-mouth present for the film's theatrical run, and there is unlikely to be any at home. The Megalopolis cast could be a draw for home viewers, as could the film's divisiveness and the big swings that Coppola takes. In general, though, the project just lacks the commercial appeal to suggest that its VOD performance will make up for its theatrical losses.
