Matt Damon's New Sci-Fi Movie With Oscar-Winning Directors Is Inception Meets The Breakfast Club

An upcoming Matt Damon movie is "The Breakfast Club meets Inception."

It was previously reported that Damon was set to play the lead role in the new science-fiction film directed and written by Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert. The Daniels are Academy Award winners, having won Best Directing, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Picture for their groundbreaking multiverse movie Everything Everywhere All at Once.

While on The Dan Patrick Show, Damon revealed that the Daniels pitched their next film to him as a combination of The Breakfast Club, Inception, an anime movie, and an unaired episode of Last Week Tonight with John Oliver. He teased it being "a really special project" that will resonate with those who enjoyed Everything Everywhere All at Once. Check out Damon's comments below:

The way they pitched it to me was: if The Breakfast Club meets Inception meets an anime film meets an episode of The John Oliver Show that didn’t get aired. So, if you liked Everything Everywhere All at Once and all the wildness and all the heart, I think you’ll really like this one. It’s a really special project.

A classic John Hughes movie, Christopher Nolan's science-fiction heist film, anime, and a satirical late-night talk show are an unusual combination under any circumstances, but not surprising given the Daniels' filmography. Everything Everywhere All at Once combined absurdist humor, heartfelt drama, and the limitless potential of the multiverse.

It was a bold approach, but the commercial and critical success, along with seven Academy Award wins, proves that it worked. The actors also fared well at the Academy Awards, with Michelle Yeoh, Ke Huy Quan, and Jamie Lee Curtis winning, and Stephanie Hsu being nominated.

Prior to Everything Everywhere All at Once, the Daniels directed and wrote Swiss Army Man, a surreal comedy-drama that involves Daniel Radcliffe playing a farting corpse. The Rotten Tomatoes critics' consensus calls the movie "as rewarding as it is impossible to categorize," a description that seemingly also fits the pitch described by Damon.

The Daniels' new movie starring Damon is set to be released in theaters on November 19, 2027 after previously being scheduled for June 12 of the same year. It is the directors' first feature film since Everything Everywhere All at Once in 2022. The only other release they have directed since then is Star Wars: Skeleton Crew episode 4, "Can't Say I Remember No At Attin."

Alongside Damon, the cast of their new project includes Sandra Oh, Charles Melton, Michael Gandolfini, PinkPantheress, Sean Kaufman, Silvia Dionicio, Jackson Kelly, Kerrice Brooks, and Thalia Dudek. While she is perhaps best known for playing Cristina Yang in Grey's Anatomy, Oh's more recent roles include the angel Martha in Good Fortune and voicing Debbie Grayson in Prime Video's hit animated superhero series Invincible. Earlier this year, Melton starred in Netflix's Beef season 2 and Gandolfini was in Disney+'s Daredevil: Born Again season 2.

By the time the Daniels' science-fiction movie is released, Matt Damon may have won his first Academy Award for Best Actor. Many Oscars 2027 predictions have him winning in this category after his widely acclaimed performance as Odysseus in Nolan's The Odyssey. The actor's performances in Good Will Hunting, Invictus, and The Martian have been nominated, but his only win to date is Best Original Screenplay for Good Will Hunting. The critical and commercial success of The Odyssey, and the awards recognition to follow, adds further anticipation to Damon's collaboration with the Daniels.

The Daniels' untitled science-fiction movie releases in theaters on November 19.
