An experienced Editor representing Canada via Screen Rant's Team Anime, J.R. has been reading manga since the first printing of Shonen Jump in North America. This passion drove him to write about anime, manga, and manhwa since 2022, having recently served as Lead Anime Editor for ComicBook.com.

His favorite moments in media coverage include reviewing the series premieres of Zom 100 and Bleach: TYBW Part 2 back-to-back and briefly meeting Junji Ito at a VIZ gallery event in 2023.

Spring 2026 has bought both its usual promises of seasonal renewal in general sense, and a new host of exciting anime for fans eager to see something new. While it largely delivers on the latter, one anticipated isekai return, that of Ascendance of a Bookworm, has come with some unfortunate allegations. While the usual suspects like wonky eye details or incorrect amounts of fingers aren't present, this hasn't stopped vocal members of the fandom from finger-pointing at telltale signs in its opening credits for season 4.

Returning Hit Isekai Slammed with Generative AI Allegations

Ascendance of a Bookworm Adopted Daughter of an Archduke anime visual

While the anime itself hasn't gotten nearly the same amount of heat as its OP featuring "Pages" by Little Glee Monster, fans are having trouble looking past the background details present throughout the opening credits. Suspected as an imitation of the Art Nouveau style, Ascendance of a Bookworm fans and prominent anime YouTubers like Mother's Basement have quickly latched onto details like lines and shapes blending into "mush" resulting in distractingly inauthentic background art.

Whether or not these claims are true, this latest outrage is also a distillation of the problem with generative AI's presence in the art form in general. Even if the background art is actually just genuinely poor in Ascendance of a Bookworm's OP, the current lack of proof beyond unreliable AI checker software has resulted in these allegations in an era of misinformation. Dubbed "the liar's dividend", this phenomenon will likely only continue to surge as faith in human projects falls alongside AI-generated content or assets, as they grow equally distrusted under public scrutiny in an age of misinformation.

This hasn't stopped WIT Studio and Ascendance of a Bookworm from highlighting the new OP for its participating staff. While the post's replies grow characteristically flooded with more AI allegations, WIT Studio animation producer Keita Yoshinobu credited Kazuto Nakazawa with storyboards and key animation, Saki Fujii for direction, and the final shot's group illustration by animation director Aiko Minowa. Even then, fans remain undeterred, staying focused on the alleged AI-generated backgrounds. It's a shame, too, especially with such a strong year in isekai for 2026.

Isekai Anime Fans Have Plenty of Alternatives in 2026

While it's undoubtedly disappointing to see Ascendance of a Bookworm's popularity undermined by possible use of generative AI, this comes just as Crunchyroll in particular unleashes an exciting salvo of isekai returns. While Ascendance of a Bookworm offered a fascinating alternative to the typical power fantasy present in much of the genre, there's plenty to enjoy across a spectrum of options. Whether it's returning Isekai Big Three hits like That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime, or oddly-enjoyable, unserious yet deeply self-aware "good isekai slop" like Reincarnated as a Vending Machine, I Now Wander the Dungeon, the options are legion.

Alternately, with more typical high fantasy offerings returning as prestige viewing options in 2026, including anticipated newcomers like Witch Hat Atelier, isekai has viable escapist alternatives once more. For those craving a mature, yet incredibly exciting dark fantasy option, there's also Sentenced to Be a Hero which just finished its first season with more on the way. The point is, for those unhappy with Ascendance of a Bookworm's allegations, there are still fortunately plenty of options in the months ahead.
